Hello all

I have decided that the only way to improve the FPS performance of my DBP Pro game is to buy myself a better GFX card.

I have a P4 1.3 gig machine with 384 meg ram. My current GFX is a 32 meg nVidia TNT Riva 2. I don't know much about GFX cards but I gather that my card is a bit clunky and old by current standards.

I'm thinking of buying a card based around the nVidia GeForce 5900 or 5950 chipset. I see these are top of the range models. I also see they say they are AGP 8x.

I've run Intel's chip util programme and it says I've got a 82850 motherboard. I had a look on Intel's website and it says the 82850 range has a AGP 4x connector.

My question is this: would a AGP 8x GFX card such as the GeForce 5900 or 5950 chipsets run on an AGP 4x motherboard?

Any views would be gratefully received. All views will help accelerate the development of my game!!

most cards are backward compatible... but make sure the card is 4x/8x or i dont think it will work... motherboards on the other hand will work with a 4x card if its a 8x motherboard...

and i dont think that a 8x card is much different than a 4x... the program running has to be developed to use the full capability of a 8x card... and i dont know of many out there that can

No they don't i'm afraid, unless you can find a version that states otherwise. There are a few variations that display AGP4x/8x, if they don't then often they don't.

these newer cards are quite a fair bit expensive, i would suggest more a GeForceFX 5700 Ultra, that why it'll cost about 1/4 the price and you can then spend another $200 on updating your processor to something a little faster - perhaps a tad more ram.
Overall it is actually a better option

im not speaking from experience on this one... ive had two vid cards... a GForce MX 200 PCI and this ATI Radeon 9800 Pro... which this one stated it is 4x/8x... only can run 4x if setup both in the BIOS and the ATI settings control panel

Well i've only had 2 GeForceFX 5900 Ultra's so i'm not sure about the non-ultra, but then the FX5700 Ultra is actually only a smidge slower lol so doesn't really matter eh

both of mine were AGP8x only, seemed cruely wierd, but then I had the same thing with my Asus 9800Pro ... would only use AGP4x despite my board being able to do AGP8x.
Another one of the many reasons that I got frustrated with it quickly.

I'll look around and try to see if i can't find a 4x FX5900 Ultra though.

I read somewhere that you could fit an 8x card into a 4x motherboard and that it would work, but it would not run at the same speed just a bit lower, but it would still be a great improvement

Flick that switch...*BANG*...Not that one!

everything over GF3 perhaps GF4 TI4200 would be waste on your system sorry because it is that slow that your card will be slowed down anyway.

In the end I was so worried about buying a GFX card that did not work with my m/board that I played safe and got myself a GeForce FX 5200 card.

It worked! All my FPS are now over 4x as fast as with my old TNT Riva 2 card.

Exxxcccceeeellllllent.

So development on my little opus is now continuing again.

Charging ahead, even.

well, unless you tweak your going to get horrible performance. If you get an nVidia card thats 8x, and you have a 4x slot, you can download the "nvidia utility" that lets you tweak your card using settings that arent in the normal area. My crappy mobo (2x agp) with my aging geforce 3 (4x) work fine with each other.

Daemon there is a huge difference, because every other GeForce card is capable of other AGP speeds.

It is only the 59x0 cards that MUST be AGP8x
5200,5600,5700,5800 are all capable of 2x,4x,8x
