Habitable Zone of Sun-like Star: Kepler 22-b

600 light-years away)
Anyone have a spare warp drive?

i thought Kepler was around for a while and i thought they already found tons of exo-solar planets out there.

[EDIT] OOH its the first earth-like planet Kepler found... i see now

I guess as soon as we get Warp-drives, that should be one of the places we visit.

News such as this always peaks my interest. But when will we see news about our hypothetical Planet X / Nibiru?

Also, what is a warp-drive? >.>

I'd like to point out that it's my agent making the high demands on pricing, not me.

I'm more than happy to work on Star Trek for a tuppence a' day.

Star Trek isn't exactly low budget, but The Next Generation isn't exactly cutting edge anymore either. And season 1 is tough to get into imo. Voyager is probably the best place to start, but you'd be missing out on a lot of the history that they reference.

A lot of people don't like Voyager, but I think it's great, only got 2 more seasons to go!

but say Stargate or star trek just hurts my eyes,,

The funny thing about this is that whatever we see now of that planet, it was 600 years ago.

-In.Dev.X: A unique heavy story based shoot'em ~35%
-CoreFleet: An underground commander unit based RTS ~15%
-TailsVSEggman: An Sonic themed RTS under development for idea presentation to Sega ~15%

Huh, good point Quel!

Quote: "but say Stargate or star trek just hurts my eyes,,"

Ahh yes, the good old "good graphics = quality" argument... Consider that invalid, the only thing that matters with story telling is the content. MineCraft hurts my eyes, but it has more quality than Black Ops. You play MineCraft right? You watch ponies right? Star Trek is one of the best Sci Fi stories you'll come across, period.

If it's 600 light years away, then aren't we getting an image of it 600 years ago?

600 light years is nothing, we just have to travel at ludacris speed. Once we hit plaid then we know it won't take long.

For those of you who are confused:

I'm a little rusty on my relativity but if you could go close to the speed of light then it would not take long at all as the planet would also become closer and closer.

It would only take 600 years for someone on earth watching you, then 600 years back, but could just be a few years for you, cool, if I have got that right

To some people graphics are everything. They are not any "less right" than someone who is more interested in story. Obviously this is all subjective.

You'd have to go faster than light for that to happen, which is impossible. I'm a bit rusty too, but from what I can remember, science's way around this is to bend space-time itself. And now that I go back I notice it's mentioned in Quik's embedded video No longer rusty.

Pretty funky discovery, would be pretty cool to be able to see what discoveries we can make about this planet, after listening on the news this morning about a new telescope being built in the UK that simply sounds absolutely amazing, it'd be cool to see technology to develop further for us to see more, because I know realistically speaking it's unlikely that's we'll be able to actually visit it in our lifetime, unless of course we either discover warp speed or immortality in that time.

I'm struggling to find the original quote there...this is a thread about planets, not games. :S

@Matty H

And a hundred years after the craft leaves, mankind improves its technology making a new craft that can jump in a few years before relative to itself, and the world around it.

So by the time the first craft arrives a its destination, it finds a long-established colony that wouldn't remember its existence and would probably treat it as alien. Wars would start. Silly, silly wars.

If you travelled a light year an hour, then it would take 25 days to reach, even at half the speed, you would be there and back in 100 days.

Thing is, how do you stop the ship from smashing into objects on the way there? You are obviously moving too quick to change course. Would the ship "pass through" these objects as if they did not exist? I always wonder how ships that use warp drive in Movies and TV manage to survive, because surely they pass through things on the way.

I'm not a physiscist, but I imagine it's similar to a bullet: Throw a bullet at a door, and it'll just bounce off, but if you shoot a bullet at a door it'll go through without any damage.

That's not entirely true. The bullet loses a massive amount of kinetic energy upon impact with the door, which also deforms the bullet. If you scale those forces up to a spacecraft... Have fun gathering your soup of atoms that once represented your space ship

Except in this case you need to replace the small wooden door with miles and miles of solid rock.

I believe the current theory floats somewhere around using worm holes for time travel where, for example; one end of the wormhole would be in our own solar system (or nearby), and the other in that planet's solar system (or nearby). In which case, the time to get from point a to b would be instantanious, rather than hundreds of light years. Like connecting two dots on a piece of paper by folding the paper rather than drawing a line.

(Love the subject of astronomy/space travel, etc)
