I made this design for a company for their movie, the entire cast in 8 bit form. Is it ok for them to release it on a t shirt, as you may notice I used the 8 bit megaman sprite as a reference, but none of the original megaman sprite remain.

I can't tell you if it's safe to use them or not, but what I can do is ask you to center the "nerd wars" text

I would also say that perhaps instead of using the font you have chosen, actually build the words out of blocks, because there are a lot of inconsistencies with that font.

Not sure about the legal issue either... But it would be nice if you used some different poses for the characters. This should give you a decent reference for what I mean.

Well, i just say to you that if you change Mario's color scheme, and for example rotate the M letter on his hat by 90 degrees... well... it would be okay to sell as 'your own'.

Just sayin...

-TailsVSEggman: An Sonic themed RTS under development for idea presentation to Sega ~15%

iam not sure if you get copyright on a POSE, but since you have copied the whole structure of it (basicly traced it) then i'd say youre on a very very thin line

Why not just make your own? They are very simple images. More work was done making them different from original, you probably could have made your own original !

I did it for fun, they didn't really ask for it.

For some reason lots of people have trouble with this in my opinion. I don't think many people would need to be told that was lifted from megaman. It's not a reference if you copy most of it.
A reference is something you 'refer' to for ideas about colour, shape, or size, for example.
