I did some research on it and it seems promising to those who love these kind of stuff. what do you guys think?

There was a thread on this a week or so ago. It looks like a very nice opportunity to get some people in programming and certainly looks like there will be many exciting projects floating around in a couple of months.

found these too. btw i actually like the pandaboard. I'm really interested in teh Raspberry Pi and Pandaboard. the Origenboard is too pricey and such. I wanted to do something like the Yinlip YDP G18 device, but they've already done it. IMO i'd rather add a right joystick and a few more buttons to make it more like the PS3 control scheme.

How does it compare to Arduino or Freeduino? There seems to be a well developed community around Arduino...

It depends what metric you're comparing. In raw power the Raspberry Pi in its own class - 700MHz ARMv6 processor, OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU and 256 MB RAM.

IO-wise you've got a fair few GPIO headers (with a huge expansion board planned as well) as well as numerous other outputs (HDMI, 3.5 audio, composite, ethernet etc.).

The footprint is that of a credit card, so most Arduinos are a little smaller than this I think?

But all in all they are in totally different leagues, and as the Raspberry Pi is actually cheaper, I think it's a no-brainer.


The only downside I can see is the community. The Arduino will have a far superior community for a long time to come...
