Newcomers DBPro Corner / Problem with updating WIP zip file

Hey, I'm trying to update my WIP with a new zip file. I've tried several different times. Once I even uploaded it without the actual application just to see if it would work. Every time after about 2 hours of waiting I've gotten this message:

My zip file is 491 megabites. A little on the big side I guess. I looked through for things to cut out of it, but I can't find anything that would make a serious difference.

Any ideas how I should approach the problem. Is it worth getting a mediafire account just to make it easier? I hope not Or could someone inform me of a good place for free web space were I could link too? Thanks!

Hope this was an okay place to ask.

That's a huge zip file Is it Blake's RPG? That's funny seeing you post about it here, because I downloaded and played that game just yesterday out of interest.

Dropbox is limited to 2.25 GB per user, but if you want to download from Dropbox you have to install the client program, and I don't think everyone will be willing to do so.

What you can do is split the file up into different pieces. I believe RAR supports this. You upload the individual files to www.mediafire.com or another free file host, and the people can then download each part and splice them back together on their end. Another possibility is to use torrents, but I'm not sure how. Either that, or you host your own FTP server and upload it there.

No they Dont...

You right click the file ensuring its in a public folder... and select copy public address url...

Hehe

breaking such a small file up is rather pointless and those stupid free sites are impossible to use and extremely irritating... they are in no way free... My definition of free in this scenario is... click.. download and play... not a million hours of waiting for a stupid timer to expire...

Hehe Comet I am surprised you know so little about DB... I would like to host this file but concerned at the users intent and hacking ability so I may never lay the card on the table...

MF is free up to 200mb per file and I believe think the total uploaded size limit is 10GB or something like that (may be wrong on the 2nd bit). So you can split your file into three parts. It's not ideal, but it may be easier that way. One thing I will say is everyone should have an online filehosting/sharing account. So whatever you do, get yourself SOME online storage because it's useful to backup your stuff with (password-protected though) and very useful to send stuff with, especially in cases like these. It really isn't worth the messing around every time this happens.

FYI: I think it's better not to upload too much to these servers anyway. I'll bet that that by doing so, we'll push TGC's server costs up and that'll negatively affect us all because then TGC products will increase in cost (and more adds will appear in the free versions). Let's rather waste MF/MU's bandwidth and storage space

precisely why I am offering my services to fellow Devs I would like to offload some storage space for TGC... it is the least I can do... as their products have revived my life and brought my dreams nearer...

Really? Wow, I learn something new every day I thought you had to download and install some program so you can access the files... At least that's why I had to do to share files with my friend. If that's the case then go for it!

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback, everyone. I've benefited from reading through this, and it will affect future decisions. However, I realized they about 4/5 of the zip size was due to my massive music files which I have converted from wav to into mp3 and Blake's RPG is down to 110 megs. I'll give it another shot now. Thanks again all.

Edit:
It didn't work haha. same error. I considered giving it a shot without any music with would cut it down to 50 megs, but maybe I should just get a mediafire.

completely agree, but what I meant was just get rid of the background music (maybe that's what you meant by sound), and leave the sounds when you pick up a coin and stuff. Still a sacrifice that I don't even have to make though with mediafire. (which I'm working on right now)

If you end up needing more space it's really cheap from them.
I ended up going with SugarSync because of its ability to neatly sync folders across multiple computers.
At any rate the public link works great on both. No need for others to D/L a client.
