Welcome to the level design tips and hints. This thread is pointing more at Horror games and Action games.

Action Games

-Some stuff that you will probably need for a good action game -
MP = Model Pack

MP 58 (If WW2)
MP 57 (If you are including a Zombies mode)
MP 53 (If it is modern day or a few years into the future)
MP 48 (You are probably going to need some rubble)
MP 46 (You are going to need buildings, alot of them!)
MP 40 (If you want more apocalypses stuff! E.g. Rubble at different sizes and such.)
Animated Sprite Pack (You are going to need fire and VFX.)
MP 36 (More Buildings)
MP 34 (Some nice large grundy factory buildings.)
MP 31 (Amazing structures, perfect for a war torn city!)
MP 3 (You are going to need this somewhere in the game!

Now for action you will want to place overlays everywhere! You would want to make a mess out of the place. If there isn't trash then its just plain boring, the room looks empty! Now in alot of my games you will see trash everywhere; why? Because it looks good.

Provide cover for your players! There's nothing worse then getting your brain splattered in the middle of the street with no cover!

Use Common Sense! Are you going to put that toilet next to that fridge? Of course not!

Make your limit on polies about 350,000. If you go higher than this then you are guarantied to lag!Remember, go for high end computers! Yes this will affect marketing but does Gears of War run smoothly on a IBM Windows98? Heck No!

For Horror Games -

For horror games you want to get these kinds of model packs -
MP 57 - Zombies! The army who tried to survive but came back undead!
MP 56 - Apocalypses!
MP 54 - You wanna turn on the power and have achievements?
MP 53 - I recommend this pack because it has iron sites and great AI.
MP 52 - Creepy as heck special zombies!
MP 48 - Need props
MP 46 - You will need this if you want buildings and such.
MP 40 - More Props
Zombie Apocalypses Pack - Need more zombies and more civilian looking ones.
Animated Sprite Pack - Nice VFX
MP 36 - More buildings for scenery
MP 31 - Great war torn environment!
MP 3 - Great for barrels and boxes and such. Little designs

Now for horror, you want to make your limit around 200,000 polys. Why? Because there are going to be alot of zombies coming at you!

Make sure to add lots of zombies running at the player. Its just boring when you can gun 2 zombies down!

As I said before, use common sense!

@ross:

today (since code veronica becomes resident evil-franchise) a horrorgame is defined in empty, modern streets and buildings with lots of zombies and splatter inside and around getting smashed by some special-force-guys with big guns.

someone remember CLIVE BARKERS UNDYING? found it yesterday in an old box. so i think i am out of fpsc the next days.

When I think about Graveyards... I think of Buffy the Vampire slayer kicking butt so... no no longer scary...

I don't see why you would want to go for high-end PC, wouldn't be better to design your levels so they'll run on a mid-level machine? More people would be able to play, and it would be in excllent practice to make your levels like this so you don't always get carried away...

OH well, I guess I'm too much of an Old School gamer.
Maybe time to hang up my guns.

Slayer... I'm going to sound like a brown cow, but give me a good reason why I would want your help making a level when you have barely done anything with FPSC let alone any Game Programing or 3D modeling.

He's suggesting that your advice is inferior to other more experienced members, which is likely to be true. Most of the advice seems like common sense but thanks for making the effort anyway.

true, but does any FPSC game look half as good as hears of war?

Quote: "Heck No!"

exactly, therefore you should aim your fpsc games at computers that SHOULD be able to run a game of that level of graphics. secondly-

Quote: "Provide cover for your players! There's nothing worse then getting your brain splattered in the middle of the street with no cover!"

that's true, but then again, throwing random barricades and stuff into the middle of the street is about as realistic as the toilet next to the fridge. generally roadways are kept clear at all costs, ESPECIALLY in emergency situations.

just saying.

Yes! And remember to add powerlines that go straight through a building and World War 1 Wood bridges in a city.

Seriously Slayer, try to actually make good maps before writing tutorials about it. Most of the core points (especially spraying overlays (which you use as static entites so they have a pitch black square shadow below them) everywhere and your insanely high polycount) are wrong.

I also like how you randomly make the connection from horror games to "tons of zombies coming at you"

This is a really friendly forum, just let me inform you nicely that threads in which you try to act skilled annoy people. Its also slightly insulting as most of your good points are self explanatory. Look! A chef wouldn't want any hints from a hotdog vendor on how to cook a steak...and thats exactly how this comes across.

We appreciate your effort, just direct it into practicing your own (rather low) designtalent.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes, art is knowing which ones to keep.

GRAVE YARDS ARE NOT SCARY ? where did that come from? grave yards are a classic staple of horror. (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD ANYONE) where do you think baby zombies come from?
