Hey All I need your help with something I'm working on. I have chosen to do my Thesis using FPS Creator. The challenge however is to create a video game that is friendly to children as young as 10 years old. There will be no guns in this game and you cannot die. I have done some research and the majority of games for this age range are puzzles and item finding type games. As well as mazes. I'm looking to add all these features together into one game for my thesis.

My question to you guys is what theme should I go with? I have purchased pretty much every existing model pack there is. I have dreamed about creating my own but have had issues with texturing my models.

So what direction do you think I should go for this game? There are themes based on Sci-Fi, Medieval, Fantasy and Modern. These however are not limited in anyway to reach other genres.

This should be moved to FPSC Chat mods. Please don't lock this.

I'd like to know more as to what you are making this game for. I know you said Thesis... but for what exactly? School, work, a hobbyist
project? If I knew more background to as to why you are doing this, then maybe I could lend some of my opinions.

Thanks for sharing.

Whoever said that Intel graphics fail, obviously never owned a Core i5.

time travel would be a good start ,collecting parts of a puzzle in a time zone could give you a boost to a new time & more parts of the puzzle.

cheers henry

Henry really nailed it there. You could go back in time and have to help Ben Franklin find his kite before a lightning storm of something that kids would be learning about in history class.

With the viking pack there should be some options there also.

whatever player is doing?
not that educational, dont you think?^^

time travel is really cool to teach history, but also modern social setup is good to teach behavior, while you can use scifi for teaching economy, ecology and how mankind manipulates its enviroment.

ASTEK is right, we have to know more to help you here. what you wanna teach the kids? no, not everything , doesnt work for little children when it gets too complex.

@Astek Its for school, though I hope to actually distribute it to youth programs and facilities when its complete. Doesn’t have to an obvious education game just anything that helps with their cognitive skills and such. I know this must sound pretty hilarious considering its FPS(shooter) Creator lol But i really think its possible from what I’ve seen done with FPSC in the past.

@maho76 what I'm trying to teach the players is mostly just problem solving. Doesn't have to be a history lesson. It could be a dective situation or solving various puzzles or mazes. More so basic level education which is not really about teaching them math or how the world work, though it could. But its pretty open to anything really. As long as it is enjoyable and fun.

I do like that time travel idea, considering all the great media from different time periods involved on the TGC Store. Any other ideas? Feel free to continue to elaborate on the time travel one as well.

@teabone: could be that you are the one^^, but look through wip-forum, someone wanted to do an educational game also for practical work with children about 1/4 year ago. see if you can find some hints there.

I'll give them a shout and see what they've come up with. I like the ideas here as well. I'll keep everyone updated here on the progress if interested. There is an actual deadline so this is one of those projects that will actually get done lol

Hi Teabone

Yes it can and is being done.

First look at the media you own and what can be made acording to that.
Secondly, check what the little 'uns are supposed to be learning.
Then find the match.
Hopefully there'll be something that excites you as that is important for the project to succeed.
Next decide as to how you wish to "teach". Written/Verbal communication is not always necessary (you, as someone involved with movies and media would know that), but it does make it easier. For communication in FPSC nothing IMHO beats RPG_Mod.

There is a Linkedin group on Serious Games and Game Based Learning that has daily discussions on this topic.

Now for some problem-solving ideas:
Puzzles; finding objects and linking/using them correctly to open some secret; time-based games where cognitive evaluations and subsequent decisions are made under stress-induced circumstances; matching correct pairs of objects which will start easily and then increase in difficulty; vocabulary building. Google the free Timezattack for an example of a Math game.

Should you want them to make decisions and then simulate the consequences of these decisions, RPG_Mod has an excellent generic selection command that allows you to do that.

E-mail me should you want to chat about this. I'd love to see with what you come up.

Good luck.

I was really impressed with some of the stuff in The Scary Thinker pack. I decided to go with a more dective kind of game. Almost like SAW only without the violence. A problem solving type of game that includes finding clues and working your way through places to reaching an end. I may have more questions reguarding some scripting, where's best for me to ask questions like that? the script section or here in this current thread?

Okay thanks guys for your help. I decided to go with a detective type game. Any further questions will go in their corresponding threads that already exist for help.

Came up with an idea. Let me know what you guys think:

World Renowned Theif Escapes Prison

It is rumored that he has stolen many more artifacts since his escape.

The police have been struggling to find clues to where the theif has gone and where he has taken the artifacts.

You are a Detective called in to help with the investigation.

You receive calls throughout your investigation to lead you to various clues. You are faced with many problem solving puzzles. Memory also plays a key rule in solving this case.

Witnesses give you cloalls aswell when you meet up with them. Some of them may call you or leave you an email or letter.

In the theif’s mansion is where he has stored all the artifacts that are stolen; hidden all over the place.

The mysterious caller that gives you clues throughout the game, you find out later in the end is the theift himself. He loves a good chase and only steals for that reason along.

The game is more of an implicit educational video game. The players are unaware of it being educational, though that's the intent of the game.
