Has been asked countless times before... The short and long of it is "yes".

Cheers,

freeware = everything is allowed, its free.

payware= has to got something so people pay for it^^ ... & not too short and easy so people dont feel betrayed to pay 5€ for 15 minutes of fun.

amnesia is not made in fpsc.

look up anderson and the legacies of cthulhu~ I think that's the top selling one making (correct me if I'm wrong) around $30,000.00

Never knew FPSC could be that successful. Perhaps I should take a look at that game.

remember FPSC is Expandable, with scripts or changing the source code or using both.

It was 30,000 copies, I believe. So putting that into perspective... I think the game still sells for $30, and I don't know what it cost upon release... so it may well have been a very nice lump sum of cash. Unfortunately, Ertlov said he made virtually no money because the publisher kept almost all the profits. Still an achievement for FPSC, though.

Edit: It's 20,000 copies. Found the thread.

I don't see the point then really. You'd be better off going completely independent of a publisher. Seems to be the smarter move.

yes, but you wont have the chance to get into pro-business AND earn that amount of sells, because self ditribution without much money to invest in forehand wont give you that much sells > you wont earn that much money simply because you cannot handle distribution on your own when it gets big.

when you get a good publisher, he can help to do something REALLY big and populize it (tv-advertisement, magazine-adds etc.), wich isnt possible without a company.

anderson was a special thing because of the worldwide lovecraft-fanbase who are not thrown to death with good cthulhu-stuff. most of it is too far away from the originals or crap. simply the googlesearch with "cthulhu game" had bring this game forward.

not possible for a private-developing single person because of time running through your fingers. when you are ready with a needed amount of your great work, you are 10 years behind standard and "zeitgeist".

i think this is only possible with a cheap but genious idea like minecraft OR to develop a real great more or less short demo and doing a professionell, very well made presentation for a studio/publisher to sell yourself with your project. thats the only way to get a proteam (those people want to be paid for the great work they do ) to do a needed amount of content in time.
but i will promise that when you where able to do this, you have to be a manager to fight against the publishers "earn-money-as-fast-as-possible-dont-think-about-giving-away-something-good-it-has-to-be-profitable-nothing-more" and wont do any development at all for the progame. ask ERTLOV about painkiller. (i think he had a need for painkillers while working for jo-wood)^^

times where publishers want to sell a GOOD game to earn respect and make themselves a name is business are long ago.
today its all about earning as much money as fast as possible, whatever will come after. modern capitalism, throw out good looking crap for full-prize and ignore protest because markets are big enough.^^

Don't forget about the time (and money) in proper advertising; that can make or break your game.
