I got a warning pop-up on two emails I sent today. Similar to this (I "greened out" the names of course ):



Anyone know what it means?

I don't know why that error occurs, but it sounds like something inside of Norton could be broken, maybe see if you can do a software update, restart Norton or reinstall it.

There's also a possibility there's a virus (though nothing I see suggests that it is), but at least not something I'd rule out. I found when my computer got a virus Kaspersky wasn't able to function properly and it couldn't even update itself (nor could other software, except NOD32). The solution that worked for that particular case was to use the trial version of ESET/NOD32, restart in Safe mode and run Malware Bytes.

Generally I tend to advise people away from Norton, I tend to hear people having problems with it. Kaspersky and NOD32/ESET have been the ones I've been most impressed with.

No, best AV ever is don't use the internet!!

Seriously, I personally swear by Microsoft's own Security Essentials, it's free, fully funstional, takes up very little in the way of resources, and it's never let me down yet. What's more, I've never had any so-called 'false positives' either...

I never found free tools to be as reliable, but then I've never tried MS's Security Essentials. I've found paid AV like Kaspersky, ESET and even Bullguard to be worth the money for peace of mind - Kaspersky only failed once and to be fair, so were other AVs, but it was ESET/NOD32 that helped solve that particular problem. Though Bullguard reports too many false positives (before 1 update it was doing it to anything I compiled in DBP), but Kaspersky has only ever given me 1 false positive.

My main complaint about the Likes of Norton and McAfee et al, isn't that you have to pay for them (then keep on paying for them!), it's that they're such horrendous resource hogs. Even some of the free AVs that I've used have been guilty of this.

So my philosophy about AV choice is simply this; if it's free, reliable and doesn't hog resources, then it's good enough for me. MS Security Essentials IMO ticks all those boxes.

Looks like we've all returned to normal.

But, back on topic, does anyone know what the message meant? The effect is that the emails affected appeared in my Sent folder but did not in fact get sent. Strange.

This gets weirder. I've just downloaded some of Evolved's shader demos onto the same machine I was having the above email problems with and this happened:



That was a classic Windows "Do I say Yes or No?" situation. I tried No first and was back where I started. The second time I opted for Yes and hoped for the best. Sure enough there was a new file called "View image etc etc.png" in the target folder. It wasn't a .png image - in fact it was the LightScattering.zip demo. A simple rename and everything was fine.

Now, hover your mouse over the View button on my previous post and look at the text that shows. Lo! and Behold! it's the same "View image etc etc.png" text that was given to the zip file.

The next two downloads went smoothly in the usual way. The really baffling thing is that it's about 6 hours since I made that previous post and I've been doing loads of other things on the machine. So where on earth did that text come from? And why did Windows think there was a file with that name in that folder?

It seems more likely that it could be a virus. It could also be Norton playing games with you or some other error I'm not smart enough to know about. Either way, both solutions require you to uninstall Norton (but not permanently if you don't want to waste the money you spent on it).

Norton is generally a bad idea and I've always treated it as Malware, I've never found it to work properly, it's bloated and I don't understand why computers come with the trial installed (I was ecstatic when my laptop asked for my permission to install it instead of just giving it to me).

Anyway:
Uninstall Norton
Install Norton
Check is problem Persists & Do a virus scan

If that doesn't fix it:

Try a system restore back to a date when you know your computer wasn't having any problems. Of course, back up any data that might be lost.


If that doesn't solve the problem:
-Download ESET/NOD32 (Or Home Security) 30-day trial
-Uninstall Norton
-Pop the kettle on
-Do a full scan
-Check is problem is solved

If it's still not solved:
-Get yourself the free version of Malware Bytes
-Do a full scan or boot up in Safe Mode and do it.


It it's none of those. It could be something to do with the Registry, sadly, I'm not knowledgeable about anything specific to do with the registry, so I could easily be mistaken. There are registry repair tools, but I wouldn't recommend using one unless you know they'll work. A lot of them seem pretty shady.

Bruce is right about MSSE I used to pay for it when it was WLOC and it was waaaaay cheaper than everyone else... why would it need to be so overpriced anyway? and was gutted they dropped it only to release it as a free program later that year... which made me very happy as Mycoffee was [free with isp] choking the life out of me and my baby [my pc]

Norton I have avoided like the plague since I can now remember ... [circa. 2002?] everytime I saw it on someones pc... I freak out and do them a favor and remove it and they say how did you make my pcfaster... [epic fail NotRun]

I have no issues with MSSE only when I reset my bios and as usual all windows apps [ms messenger etc] freak out because it does not know what era it is... and the cloud sync systems they have do not believe what year it is so they disconnect you... but aside from that hardly ever had any issues aside from one messup... where I had to remove it dunno what happened there but might have been ruding an update or something ... lesson learned [do not frikken restart while updating]

I have always thought of sending a message to those companies going something like this...




or something like that...

OH funny thing... there was a period during my time without antivirus after MS shut down WLOC and I tried mycoffee and just removed it... funny thing... I actually got a virus while using mycoffee and never had one while not having any on whatsoever...

meh... stupid stupid stupid [bangs head on wall]

Personally .... I do not think I would want NOTRON and MyCoffee to be snooping in my emails... specially when they report everything back to their head offices

the annoying thing is when you disable a component it begs you to .... sorry it bitches you to turn it back on... so really there is no option whatsover to turn them off... kinda anal if you asked me
