Hi all

I am doing a RPG game where the player often communicates with other characters.

Poll
Would you rather hear the player's (your) words being read by a recorded voice or do you prefer reading them and "hearing" your own voice in the game?

Thanks for your time - i would love to read your opinions.

Eugene

I prefer a silent character. It's easier to put yourself in their shoes I feel.

^^This^^

I know it's not an RPG game, and I know I keep banging on about it, but it was one of the things that made Half-Life so good...

For pure RPG I think its better to 'read' text on screen rather than hearing recorded voices.
Its sometimes hard to understand different accents and the pace in which people speak.

I hope we hear from more people about this. I prefer Ross tra damus' approach to RPG. However, if one would like to have audio voice acting then the player should be silent, as others have said.

My personal preference is a silent player, but with recorded characters.

If using recorded you need text as well, some users may be deaf. So it doesnt seem necessary to have both.

Personally I prefer text although using voice for non player characters does seem a little more immersive.

I am not sure about cut scenes though as it may seem a little strange to use text for player responses in these.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

Any thread with rolfy joining in is an awesome thread.

A selfish ad follows:

I had created a new command for elbow so that he can use both text and audio at the same time. When the audio ends the text (talkbox) disappears as well. This is within RPG EdMod. I have not given it to Ched80 yet for the public version.

That sounds about right to me, as I said it would seem odd to have only player text in cutscenes so your going to have to use player voice somewhere, I think all games out there do really. In game most player talk is choice but I think about it and maybe voice and text is not such a bad thing.

With games like 'Hitman' voice actually adds a lot to the player character. So I guess if its done right it works

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

Thanks for responding, guys

@Bruce3771 I am not a "gamer" (that's why I have to ask the question) so I don't know how Half-Life works. Is the player silent?

Thus far I see 5 for silent. And one for it could work.

@Flatlander - the command works excellently. Thank you once again.

Any other opinions?

Regards

Eugene

Sorry, I forget that not everyone (shock, horror!) has played Half-Life!

Yes, in Half-Life, the player character is silent throughout.

I agree with what's already been said; i.e. Voice recording for NPCs and silent text for the player character in RPG games. Although I'm also in favour of silent player characters in most other genres too.

I just want to add this (sorry if I'm diverging from the topic slightly); I HATE cutscenes, I've always thought of them as the lazy way to explain a game's story. Rather like a TV Drama using a voice-over narrative.

Cutscenes take something away from a game's immersion, especially an FPS. The whole point of an FPS (including RPG FPS games Like Deus Ex etc), is that the player is viewing the game as if it is HE/SHE that is experiencing the game's story/events.

I'd rather play through an entire game uninterrupted by cutscenes, figuring out the plot for myself as I go. That way I can imagine that it really is me in the game. It's the same for voices, I'd rather use my own voice (in my mind), and come up with my own responses to events.

An RPG is slightly different, in that you are given choices of replies. But I'd still rather it was my own voice that I'm imagining in the game.

Anyway, I think you've got the point by now, so I'll shut up!!
