Hey guys, I'm new to FPS, so I was hoping to hear from the Advanced guys any tips and hits before I start.

My idea is to create a small prototype game to test the waters.

I plan on a more Adventure + FPS game. So there will be keys to find, clues to read, etc ...

Any information would be great. Which mods I should look for, etc ...

Thanks!

For an adventure type game, I would recommend you take a look at RPG Mod;

Perfect, I was already looking at it, but didn't know if on my case it would help. I guess it will, thanks.

Just need to figure out how to use the message system.

The only hint I can give you is to start small. And test, test, and then test again. Once you've tested, test. And then do another test.

And don't get frustrated. There's a slight learning curve to some of the stuff.

But welcome to FPSC!

Thanks guys, still waiting for my order to clear, so I can start playing with the full version. How long they usually take to approve orders?

Many will agree with me that the best thing to do is learn to script,
and search for and download all free models, media and scripts.

for RPG type games RPG mod is an amzing mod

let me get you started on free scripts, attach to trigger zones for them to work

Ok, I already read the whole FPS official manual and did some testings. I also place an order for extra packs, so I have more things to play with.

Today I received my orders, NICE! downloading ...

So, one thing I didn't read about yet, and I don't even know if its possible, but how does SAVE and LOAD of games work for the end-user? Is there such feature? I will check the manual again for that.

I'm making the game-manuscript now, so I know what kind of scripts I will need.

Thanks again for all the input so far.

Once your level (or game) is finished, you can click the BUILD GAME button under the File tab. Once that is done you will be able to customise your loading screens, your menu screen and buttons etc.. before you build your standalone .exe. Once your exe has been built, simply run it and the Save and Load features will be available, you can also give the file to a friend and they will be able to run your game without FPSC. Make sure you upgrade your FPSC to the newest version (1.18) or the Betas of 1.19.

Have fun.

Hello my friend,

Welcome to FPS Creator,

Welcome to this beloved community that also helped me.

I began with FPSC almost 6 months, and i am still learning.

Believe me, FPSC is an awesome game engine, in my oppinion, the best Game Engine for FPS Games oriented to "not so hard nerd programmers"

With the new updates of this engine, it is gaining new features, and also some features that you can find on top-notch engines (UDK, Crytek, Unity).

But if you want to create a good game, a real playable and enjoiable game, first of all you MUST master a 3d Modelling / Animation Software, be it 3dsmax, Maya, Blender, Milkshape, and such.

Believe me, the more tools you know for work will help.

Second, as you are already working with FPSC, first of all, read the oficial fpsc manual, and do testings following the manual.

This will be good for you get used to FPSC, a first learning pass.

Then, after this, you must study the official community guide:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=131868&b=21

When studying it, i say, ALL the examples, ALL the scripts that are in this community guide, when you read this manual, and follow the examples, the exercices, you will have a VERY GOOD understanding on FPI Scripting.

You will not be able to create a good game without learning scripting.

And also you must learn how to import your own models and animations to FPSC, because this is what will make the difference.

For this is essential that you purchase some model packs to see how things work, open the X-Files in Fragmotion or Milkshape and analise them, see how the bones structure is made within characters, see how the guns are rigged, and such.

To help you, here follows the steps i followed to learn FPSC:

1- Read the FPSC Manual and do Some Testings

2- Read the Official Community guide to learn Scripting

3- Learn how to make custom guns to FPSC (both model, rig and animation)

4- Learn how to make custom characters to FPSC (both model, rig and animation)

5- Do a lot of tests, download fpi scripts to test, download models and such

6- Learn how to use shaders, and if you want to go more deep, learn how to program shaders for FPSC. A good begin is purchase Model Pack 38

7- At least learn how to convert the nvidia shaders to FPSC, because there is a great resource of free shaders from nvidia

8- Learn how to create custom segments using the Segments Editor

9- Learn how to create entire levels in a 3d modelling program like 3dsmax, or google sketchup and export it to FPSC. This way you can have amazing levels in FPSC and even you can create all the lighting in this 3d software and then bake the textures

10- Be patient, never give up and dedicate yourself.

Hope those tips be usefull,

007.

Thanks 007! I'm checking that manual link right now.

I just got FPS up and running, and compiled the 2 examples included. Its great! Loved the graphics, much better than the demo preview. Also loved the game system menu, I like it.

For my first draft game I will use packs purchased instead of creating my own, too much work for something I have no idea if it will pay in the long run. I will compose some new tracks for the draft, as I'm a musician. www.William-K.com

Welcome to the family William. As said above test test test. I reccomend not getting too serious about getting a game built and done just yet. Start small and work your way up. Gt to know the engine and what you can do and not do with it. Because FPSC does have some limitations, the better you know the engine the better you'll be at figuring out work arounds to the limitations.

As others have said learn scripting. Start with somethng simple like turning off a light or something like that. What I usually do when I am trying somethin exprimental like a script or a switch set up. I have a default test map, it is only one room and thats what I use to test whatever tweeks I have made. It's a lot easier and faster to say test a switch, than to set it up on the level your working on and have to wait for it to load and have to go through the whole level to see if it works.

when it come to building a finished game, check out the Wips and the finished game forums and watch some game videos. They are great for coming up with ideas for your maps.

Most importantly above all else. Be patient, it takes a while to really learn all that FPSC has to offer and how to utilize the engine to produce a good game that is fun to play. There are memebers on this forum who have been using the engine for years and they are still learning.

Don't be afraid if you get stuck to throw a question out to the forums. Everyone is here to help. And if you see a question posted that you can answer, don't be afraid to give back. Even if your wrong someone will correct you. I don't know about you but I learn way more by being wrong than I ever do being right.

Just to confirm, the 1.8 Gig memory limit is per level, right? So if I build a game, this limit will go on a per level basis, correct? Just checking, as my first level is at 1.7 Gig and I want to start the next level now...

The first level is completely built and tested. 120 Meg download compressed. (self extracting WinRar) I'm uploading it now, later today I will give the link hoping some users could test it for me.

I want to know things are correct before I start working on the other levels.

Cheers, Wk

You can remove the 1.8Gb memory cap in the FPSC root folder's setup.ini file.

Just change this line;

systemmemorycapoff=0

to;

systemmemorycapoff=1

It doesn't give you unlimited memory, but gives you a 2Gb limit instead of the 1.8.

Thats the very thing FPSC is designed for. Good choice. I salute your mature approach to FPSC, as we have a large amount of younger members around here recently who try to play gamestudio and advertise their projects as the next call of duty so... Its nice to find this thread.

As a matter of fact, I have written a bunch of Tutorials that might help you and can be found here

Enjoy your stay here.
