hey guys, i was wondering, wich modeling app you guys using to model/skin and animate to .x object?
i was using 3d max untill now, but im not satisfied with that.
it looks like the panda directx exporter cant UVW map a skinned object. the textures exports to .x with default uv coords, wich all looks very messy

tryed gmax, but its sux ass.. it has very poor uv mapping methods..

so wich one you guys using or suggesting? it dont have to be free, i just wondering though. wich one is the best those days to work good with .x and dbp..

it can, after uvw map you need to convert the object to editable mesh and then animate/export it

I suggest that if you already have 3d Studio Max, use it. It is definitely one of the better modeling programs out there probably only rivaled by Maya. I haven't used Maya, but it seems that a lot of video game companies use it for game models as it seems to be more focused on that aspect. 3ds Max seems to be more aimed at video, but I use an older version (9) and it still does some awesome stuff. Especially paired up with ZBrush.

Pandasoft's exporter does in fact export the UVW maps. You may need to check the settings, (they can be a little fickle) but it does in fact do this.

You could also do this.

I use 3ds Max exclusively and have no problems with it, as you can see with my work!

But you want something with that level of power that you can get for free, give Blender a go!

Hi CumQuaT,

I'm keen on learning some techniques of getting models out of 3ds Max and into DBPro. Any pointers to some decent tutorials that you could recommend?

@ Burning Feet Man: u don't need any tutorials for that. just make sure you using files as textures, don't use 3dmax materials, and don't use the material options like tiling.. also what I learned today, convert the model to editable mesh after u done modeling and uvw warped. use the panda DirectX exporter to export the mesh out of the 3dmax to .x file. its easy to use it.

Daz3D Hexagon is free and it seems pretty good

I saw Daz3D released Hexagon for free. I've used Hexagon 2 since release and it's not a bad tool, it's got decent features and up until 2.5 I found it to be buggy on my computers, though other users didn't really seem to encounter those problems. It is aimed at modelling, UV mapping and even on model texturing (though it's on modelling texturing isn't as well featured as Bodypaint 3D, but then Bodypaint 3D has a heftier price).

If you're willing to spend money on a 3D modeller, Silo 2 is like Hexagon in terms of features, except, in my opinion, loads better. The reasons I think it's loads better is because it's really well designed and ergonomic, which I think is pretty important for an artist. Its tools are pretty intelligent. Some of my greatest models have been done in Silo's demo.

What about the animation and exporting to DBP? MilkShape 3D, it may be pretty bare bones, but it's cheap, it's quick and easy to set up an animation and it exports to an incredible number of file formats.

You could easily:

Hexagon 2 -> .obj -> Milkshape3D -> Animate -> .x -> DBP

Though I've found it's a good idea to triangulate your model before sticking it into MS3D.
