hey guys it has been while since I have used DBP but im starting a new project to try and get back into it.
I am looking for info help on connecting to and modifying MySQl databases. Can it be done with built in DBP commands or do i need something else.

The other question is about GUIs I have been trying to get TOPgui to work for me but when I try to run the tester file It gives me this error
"Compilation Failed. Could not determine parameter type of 'get type pattern$(name$, 0)' at line 6658."

Any help would be great.

"get type pattern$" is a native DBPro command, and has been for some time. Are you using a very old version of DBPro? If so then you'll need to update.

There have been a number of database plugins in the past, I suggest you search the forums and see what comes up.

When I go to DBP/Help\Check For Updates... It says Im up to date what should I do to find out what version I have?

If you go to Help/About it should tell you the version number.

Is the command highlighted correctly in the editor? Do you have any plugins installed that use "name$" as a command?

OK if I go to Help/About Editor"Build Oct 2 2008"

Quote: "Is the command highlighted correctly in the editor?"

No I will try the update from the tgc site and see if that fixes it.

[quote]Do you have any plugins installed that use "name$" as a command?][quote]I dont think so.

Thanks for the help I will reply in a bit after the update is finished.

I'm pretty sure there are non plugin ways to connect to a database. I've done it myself before when I made a monster database generator so that I could populate a world with little or no effort.

I'll see if I can find the code and post a bit later.

You could send an http request to a .php file, assuming the MySQL is on a web server.

@MrValentine, perhaps you'll remember this post for when you try and fail with the inbuilt commands

Unless they've since been fixed, I haven't tried recently:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=192402&b=1

As for connecting directly to a mysql database, it's extremely dangerous! You really should route through a php or some other script first.

I recommend for games download whatever data you need from a script hosted online, and if you need database type features within your engine (complex sql statements or something), use sqlite with a datastore held in memory for speed, or saved on disk if you need data persistence.

@Jerico2day will have a looksie after posting this...

I have bought a recently published PHO and MYSQL book recently so i might be taking the PHP parser route eitherway

[goes over to Jerico2day's first link... ]

[looks at second link]

Thanks Jerico2day I guess its PHP all the way for inbetween database management... now to just figure out how to parse data...

For parsing, Query results get dumped into an array which can be iterated with a simple while loop, strings can be split into an array by what ever delimiter you want spaces pipes or what have you

The wonderful thing with PHP is you can output however you want. You can do XML (great xml parsers are available for dbp), HTML, or just a plain old text file with data seperated by newlines.

php is general scripting language, it outputs whatever you want to the webserver which then can serve it to out via http or https.

So php can output a text file, an xml file, an html file, a binary file, pretty much any kind of file you can think of.

Thanks Ortu but trouble with web references is they are not always comprehensive full of ads and often incomplete or lacking detail...

A book though I usually never read them is much more abc as opposed to abdkglruz as is the internet

The PHP manual has no ads, and is the definitive manual for PHP. If it isn't up-to-date, nothing is. Much less a physical book.
