Dr OcCuLt you weren't kidding when you said you'd give us a little challenge.

Very well done game so far.
-Good atmosphere
-Love the textures
-Good collision

Might wanna consider adding some kinda projectile to come from the gun you start out with.(Just to help make the game a little more realistic.)

Overall it's very good, and I await to see the full version.

This is awesome. I hope that you plan to make more weapons for the player that shoot "stuff", not invisible bullets - then it will be perhaps too cool.

Gameplay was pretty good. Only thing that bothered me were the textures. Just doesnt seem kosher to me. Also on the second level I was about to walk through a door and I fell out of the level.

WOW! I like this.

Like bullet holes except they sometimes are at wrong angle or in mid air. Even aliens bullets leave bullet holes!

When you are in 'crouch' mode, aliens shoot over your head.

If you are in 'crouch' mode in a tunnel and uncrouch, your camera is above tunnel where it shoudn't be

'Accept' is misspelt on first locked door panel

Keep up the good work.

Boo!

It doesn't have to be a game, with the alien as your main character? It can be your enemy too?

By the way, your game looks good so far. I'm downloading it right now, 60 % done... Cya

Unzipped it, started up. But when i play it, the floor, ceiling and walls are Black! The FPS is 70 - 80. My video card is a GeForce 2 64 MB. What is the problem?

An update on that error:
The gun was found in the second level on top of an orange box in the smaller of the two rooms (that I found) with boxes. this room has about 4-5 aleins in it.

Hope this helped in your quest to find the missing media

Oh, and I think it said the line number was ?44? I can't remember..i just glanced at it. I'll try to get a ss of that gun and i'll get the line/error message

Nice work, VERY fun

OK, I just got back to the point of the error:

HPC gun
Line 3440
Screen shot:
IMAGE REMOVED

[EDIT] I guess I was wrong with the guess of line 44

@Froggermon

Just think there are some users less fortunate than you and they aren't unable to make their sounds or textures and this is the place where people try to program something with an amatorial coding program, so don't be so hard, we aren't professionals!

@Dr OcCuLt

you show some abilities with this demo, but be careful to make the game addictive, it is a bit boring to fire invisible bullet at the same alien for all the play. And the rooms are quite the same, so it is impossible to remeber the place you are.Need a map and a compass.
Good idea the hole of the bullet in the walls!!!i liked it.
Then, you need a good 2d artist.

@ Dr OcCuLt: I have DirectX 9. Should i show you a screenshot? I can see doors, and ammo clips and some walls. The doors are purple/blue and some walls are dark grey. I can't see the medkit.

I know where Froggerman is coming from but not everyone has help or the talent to create all the content they need to make a game. I know that I can't. But I still want to try. I also think the contest will be graded less on visuals and more on gameplay. Just like in a commercial game. Graphics sell but gameplay is what makes a classic.

I don't think graphics are the major component of this contest though it certainly states in the rules that it is a criteria...

"Your game will be judged according to the following criteria. They are in order of importance: (1) The use of the Alien character (2) Overall game play (3) Presentation quality including graphics, music and sound effects."

but also

"Finally we will be looking at the quality of presentation. Not how well the graphics are drawn, but how well they are used in the game. Do they move about smoothly, do they fade on nicely and are they presented in an imaginative way? Do the sound effects fit in with the overall game style? These sort of things are paramount to the success of your entry."

That to me says that graphics are important but not the most importanat factor. Gameplay and design ar ewhat will win the contest. Even if every person in the contest used the exact same graphics and animation, the best design and programming should always win.

I am as novice a user as you will find but I am trying to put together an entry in hopes of winning one of the DB Pro prizes so I can spend my upgrade money on something else after the first of the year. Do I have much of a chance? Probably not, but I hope that I am designing a game that will be different from everyone elses designs and maybe just get lucky with gameplay. I am no good at textures yet so I will have to use free texttures and some sounds though I can create my own music and hopefully some decent models. But seeing some of the work in progress is very impressive and I can't wait to see all the entries at the end of the contest.

Wik: thanks a lot i now whit gun you meen. good work

Wolfish King:if you do`t have a site you can just e-mail me a screenshot

DBoy780:yes game play and over all design are more important then the graphics. if you look at what was the win in last comptition that did not have the best graphics but it hand the most professioal fills of any DB program i`v seen.

I'll just stop myself from rambling by putting things like this.

I see where you're coming from Froggermon, but that's the trouble with putting things up for download. Let's just try not to hijack Dr. O's post.

@Froggermon

I think it will be fairly obvious to Rich when he plays the final games which games use downloaded textures and which are custom. I know that in the comments for the Retro compo, some entries lost points because of their use of downloaded media.

From what I have seen in the past, games with downloaded textures don't always "fit together" in terms of graphical appearence, and that could lose points.

I have deleted all the posts relating to this because I don't want the thread hijacked.

Quick comments:

1 - Playability and controls are simple and work well. (I especially like the target box which focusses on objects) Being able to use the W A S D keys instead of the arrowkeys would be handy though

2 - The textures need to be altered a bit so that they fit together more

3 - AI is hard to code I know, but you need to make it so that Aliens will respond immediately if shot, even if they are out of their "sight range" which seems to exist, and nearby aliens will respond if their friends are shot.

Wolfish King: i think it is time to take it to the bug forum. but i my put it in the read me file as a hardware comfit.

Rob K:
1)the keys will be alterable so you set it up to use W A S D keys or the number pad if you what

2) I am work on some new textures some of the downloaded one did not fit in and some where just use as temps any way

3) the AI will do this in the end. It can do it now but I hand to turn it off for some reason I can remember.

Jopie dopie: some of the guns will have animation. If I get time at the end.

Make it so the aliens turn around faster.

I have the taskbar set to autohide, when I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen the taskbar pops up.

Hey, Wolfish King, I think that it might be your Nvidia card. I used to have a similar problem when playing GTA 3 on the pc. What happened is that I had to download the Q306676 patch from the microsoft website. It is a problem with the nvidia drivers. Here is the link so that you can download the patch: http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Patch/Q306676/WXP/EN-US/Q306676_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe
