What's something fairly easy to program but would be a good learning experience?

Uh...I learned programming from programming my graphing caluclators, and it was one of the best choices I ever made.

Trying to learn programming concepts is a difficult process if you've never programmed before...

You programmed calculators, how? You mean you acutlaly programmed calculators in real life, not a calculator on the computer? How di you do so?

Anyway, why doesn't this work?

Thanks everyone

I used a normal TI-83, although, I learned VB first.

I don't know what level you are at, if you are a complete beginner then I'd say stick with text based things like a "Hello World!" program, then move on to text I/O based things like a question-and-answer game, where the game asks a question and presents the user with multiple choice, keeping score along the way until all the questions are done - think about reusability, where the determination of right and wrong and keeping score is always the same, just the q's and possible a's change along the way so write the routine to be generic and have the program plug in the right arguments - so read up on functions

If you are well beyond this in your skill level then like I said start with something easy like getting an object to move around on the screen based on keys being pressed or mouse input - then move up from there to something harder like pong!

If you want the code from pong I can post it here

You need to rotate spites to whatever angle you wish

if downkey()=1 then rotate sp#, 180

Move is SP, Velocity

No, no, just help me get this done.

This is what I currently have, and it works if you hit the top part of the screen, but it WILL NOT make the desired "barrier" at the bottom. I have no idea why, but I need help on this.

The rotation determins direction

To Move Right
"Rotate Sprite SPNum, 90"

then "move Sp#, Pixels"

I just posted a PONG Game for the 2D Forum Check it out it is simple but clean and flexible it may get you going.

There's always the Hello World demo!
I made breakout before I made pong, but pong does require less work.
You could always make a pacman game using ASCII characters. That was the first semi-game I ever wrote.

As long as the sprite is on the screen, don't these two lines cancel each other out?

if sprite y(1) > 1 then move sprite 1,10
if sprite y(1) < 799 then move sprite 1,-10

@Inkybro:
* you're using 800x 600 rez.
* 800 pixels is the horizontal rez.
* 600 pixels is the vertical rez.
* sprite y() is for vertical rez.
* sooooo.. your paddle will go off the bottom of the screen!
change:

to:

that should work!

If you aim at nothing you'll hit it every time. 806mhz AMD Athlon Processor. 384MB memory.
Windows XP Home Edition. RADEON 9700 Pro graphics card. - editor.exe=1.0.6.1 - DBPCompiler.exe=V1.05
