i've been messing around with FPSC for a while, enjoying it a lot. i've seen these things, overlays and decals, i haven't messed with them yet but I want to. So i figured i would ask on here what they are all about, so i can get some understanding of them before i try and mess with them.

please and thanks ,

Overlays are are placed on top of either entities or segments to add a bit more visual interest. They can be anything from blood splashes to computer screen displays.

Decals are things like smoke and fire etc and are often animated. For example, in the WW2 entities folder, there is a stone fireplace, you can add a fire decal to bring it to life.

Basically, they both bring a bit of extra life to a scene.

I'm sure there's a better way to explain what they are though!

Hello Scythe_reaver,

Besides the other previous suggestions in the Official Community Guide to FPS Creator compiled by Nickyduce first volume which you may find it inside of the Docs folder of the FPSC on page 151, there is a good tutorial titled "How to create your own decals" by Higgins as well.

Enjoy!

Xplosys also created an application called OverLaze which you can use to create overlays. Quite a handy application to use.

As far as what decals and overlays are, look at it in simple terms. Decals are things like flame for a candle or torch on a wall, steam from a valve, etc. Overlays are items that add to the existing segment/entity to give it more detail, such as money placed on a table, grime on the floor, leaves on the ground around some trees, etc.

thanks guys, but i have 1 quick question. i've messed around with them a bit, and i can't really make them look good. like the rubble doesn't really look like rubble when i place it on a wall segment, it just looks like a messed up mesh segment (will provide a picture if needed)

Some overlays look better on floors, while others look good on walls, it's a matter of finding the right one for the situation you're using it in...
