i mean wow, the features on it.

record a different tv channel while watching another one, pause the channel your watching and come back to it

it's like jaw dropping to see all the menu too go like a flash. beats the old box from when we first got digital when it came out

Nah, just got normal Sky with ALL the channels. Sky keep hassling me to upgrade to sky+ but I hardly use my video recorder any more, so having a hard drive type TiVo recorder would be useless to me.

£200 to upgrade is a bit much. Maybe when price comes down I'll change my mind!

Does it really have that green rotating led thingy like on the ads?

The menu's are easier to navigate, not to mention one HELL of alot faster. You can set it upto record programs or entire series and it'll even cut out the adverts, if you want to then put that onto video all you have to do is on playback press record on your VCR/DvD Recorder...
The increase speed also help with games, email and internet browsing - not to mention Satillite speed internet (50Mbit, its instant) ... and the game controllers for Tomb Raider and such rock because it feels like your playing a game.

Pitty that we still don't have anything even close to Sky+ here
the UK has it so sweet

worst part is the British Sky Broadcasting company signed a deal with Microsoft, Nintendo & nVIDIA for thier next system (not doubt handled by Pace to produce), but essentially they want an answer to the Playstation X ... this is no doubt in addition to the fact they're putting up another 2 satillites to finally officially cover Europe.
Currently countires like Holland, France, Belgium, Norway closer to the UK setup thier own set-top boxes and effective steal Sky ... and well BSkyB want to finally capture this pirating market, combined with a Broadband service and a cheaper console.

£300 will get you a system pretty much the same speed and power as a GameCube + Broadband Sat Internet + Sat Radio + Sat TV + Tivo.
Unlike the PSX it won't have a DvD Recorder, but is a good £300 cheaper so you can forgive that

I have to say I think in terms of TV the UK is the winner - a widespread takeup of satellite (better than digging up a street to place cables ) and smart stuff like sky+ just shows that we're good for something

Im very happy with the cable TV I get here in the US. The only channels I watch are comedy central, Spike, Fox, NBC, and adult swim. One of my friends has digital cable and It sucks because he gets too many channels. The extra 600 channels he gets that I dont are just crap. Everytime I want to flick it around the stations I have to take 5-10 minutes to do it.

In the UK Cable is way behind Sky. I think it's mainly an attitude thing, Cable don't respect their customers, and so they can only afford a sub-standard service on the customers they manage to keep.

When we ripped cable out and put Sky in, we gave the cable box back to the pick-up guy in the Sky Box. He laughed, and said everyone working for Cable gets Sky because they know just how bad it is.

Yep, I have cable and Sky. Mainly Sky for the channels, and cable for internet (no ADSL in area until just lately). Recent cable probs basically let me find out (via bored useless person on phone) that they all use ADSL at home. Typical.

Oh, and I was going to get Sky+, but the new boxes are coming out at the end of the year with 120Gb rather than 40gb. So I'm waiting. Rumour came from a source that also stated the subscription costs would be dropped around October time. Which they pretty much did, so I'm taking it as red on the new boxes.

As to PSX, I was really really really interested, but I doubt if it will totally link in with the Sky viewing guide, and will probably need phone access for channel guide info. And would probably need setup of Sky box, and PSX timers. ie. really annoying, like using VHS. Why bother? Want one timer for precision recording, and extreme ease of use.

Cheers

hey i found something out yesterday whilst sorting out the stuff for my brother's new apt.
Sky+ although £200 to install is only £19/month for all the channels cept the Sport/Movie/Premium

that surprised me considering I was gonna get him Cable, but that would've cost me £45/month for the same package ... plus the additional £90 for installation.
^_^ looks like he'll be getting Sky+ with a 1MBit Broadband Line, should make him happy... i mean if i was gonna spend the same ammount might as well give him faster net as he loves his online games.

I always thought that Sky was even more expensive to be honest.
even will the full channel set inc Sport/Movies it's still only £38/month ... wonder why Cable is so much more.

Cable give you good all-in-one deals though with tv/adsl/phone but you dont get big choice of sky channels and I hear horror stories of cable broadband.

sky costs me 40/month (It's just gone up in price again)
phone line 10/month
bt adsl 27/month

That's 77 quid a month! I have cable in my street and could probably save a few quid but I like my 100 odd channels on sky and bt adsl has never let me down.

i find sky digital and ntl phone+internet the best way to go.

if i wanted a phone line for myself it only costs £5 per month extra to the bill

also ntl cable broadband is better than adsl

Yeah, Sky is better than cable for TV (I have both).

And until really recently I would agree with the NTL better than ADSL statement. But has been really really really bad lately. Really bad. Can we spell DNS?... grrrrr..... Tis fine now though. Apparently we were over subscribed in the area (although other areas had the same effects if you look at nthellworld) and they had to sort it out. Obvious lack of caring while it wasn't working though...

2 of them caused by viruses

i do like the 600kbit upload compared to the 256kbit from adsl

600kbit upload? Thought it was 600 down and 128 up? Compared with 512/256 on ADSL.

Well, at least the upload was 128 when it was 512 download.

the beauty of cable Dazzag is that it technically is just like a Terminal/Cat connection only capped speed.

So your download is just as fast as your upload ^_^
the only thing that'll affect speed is the number of people online at once, ADSL doesn't work like that so be it 1 or 200 people (depending on the exchange) the speed never changes.

personally love being on cable here, cause i'm the only bugger on it in my entire area - or close too. So i get some phenominal pings ^_^

When I had DSL I got 128 upload / 384 downstream. Now I have 1mbps and that's around 800 down, I think.

Cable should be 10,000Kbps max up/down with standard NTL modems if I remember rightly (ie. 10Mbps, or something like 20 times the old 512 speed). Remember reading something a while back about NTL's system should be able to provide you with a max of about 30Mbps if you had more advanced hardware. Tis just capped to whatever they want (ie. divide that amount between a set number of people near you - about 50 in most areas I recall). But it doesn't go up with NTL if less people in your area are on. You may have a 600 link with NTL, but it won't become 1200 if half of the shared people are online. Annoying though.

Now when I first bought NTL broadband a few years ago now, it was *def* 512/128. Deffo. Mainly because I was a little annoyed that I couldn't get ADSL in my area and that was 512/256. Since then NTL went to 600 down a little while back (for the old 512 link), but I've never heard anything about an increase in upload.

Think I'll just get a tent in work. Would be nice for the upload speeds

Oh, and for a slight change of subject (again)....

Considering the idea of using work for internet connections because of the extreme speeds, check this out for portable storage http://www.babyusb.com/ Basically I was looking for a nice small portable USB key. My old 10Gb laptop drive replacement USB drive thingy was just a little big and noisy. But everything was huge (I don't really mean huge, obviously wasn't the size of a house). Till I found this site. Also good value really. I bought the baby stick thingy. Is really small and really really really thin. Tis nice. £50ish for a tiny 256mb key is pretty good.

Hmmm, seem a bit salesmaney there, but I was really impressed. Even comes in a nice "watch" type box. Nice.

Cheers

Dazzag its actually based on the modem the cable company gives you, me and a mate found this out when he came over to my place and rigged himself up and was getting a bandwidth of 3mbit.

problem was though the modem service desynced after like 5hrs, which says to me they not only cap your speed but to make sure you don't use a faster modem they also cap your download rate.
mine has been running at around 256kb recently but is a 160k line, so has been loosing the gateway connection alot.

can't complain though ^_^

and Daz, checkout watford.co.uk - they've got some pretty good USB memory/hard disks.

Yeah, and even the old modems (ie. mine) can handle 10Mbit lines. It's just they cap it. And 600/128 is the default for the standard Broadband. Am pretty positive that the 1Mbit line is still 128 upload. Unless NTL changed it and didn't email me. Although this has happened before I suppose.

As to getting higher rates with NTL, well hell their compitancy differs from area to area. Although a positive cock up is always a good thing. Esp. as NTL deserve everything they get. Check out www.nthellworld.co.uk for interesting stories. Don't bother with .com though as this was actually bought by NTL a while back, and the bad stories seemed to go missing (they used to have heaven and hell links, which don't work now suprisingly). My area, BTW, is totally, utterly crap.

As to Watford. Yep, pretty good company. One of machines came from there. All good, apart from the IDE cable wasn't plugged into the HD when I got it, and there was a pen loose in the case. Still, no probs apart from that. As to USB keys... hmmm, bit pricey aren't they? They only seem to have the Ministor ones, and the 256mb one costs £130 (with everything). Mine cost (if I remember rightly) about £57 for the same memory, and looks a hell of a lot smaller than the one they have. Size of a car key? Grief, they are pretty large. Mines like half that, and seriously (really really seriously) thin. Put it this way, the only annoying thing about hanging it around your neck is the slightly annoying rope thingy that attaches to it. You honestly don't feel the damn thing. Which leads to worrying moments in the toilet when you think you've lost it.

dunno Daz, i tend to end up asking my bro who i've train well ^_^ to get me new hardware ... he has a card and an account with Royal Class now, so he tend to go upto Luton and gets me some good shop floor stuff (that he demands to be tested first, hehee) and i tend to get alot of packages of cool lil gizmo's sent to me with

"Check this out Bro" on it lol
they tend to get alot of exclusive hardware too, like i've noticed they're the first to have Creatives new FX5700/5950 cards (even the Creative shop doesn't sell them yet)
And they've got some very very good Bluetooth stuff there, upgrade my Ericsson with thier stuff alot. ^_^

Personally, apart from the USB key, I haven't actually bought much in the last year. Infact the last real thing I bought was a cheapy scanner (HP effort for about £60 from Tescos. Nice to see electronics when you are buying spuds), and a PC (2400) to join my 1900 (have lodger, like Unreal 2003 a bit...) to have decent multiplayer gaming (have a growing supply of "old" PCs upstairs that are on KVM switches, but begging for wireless PCI really..., like my laptop). But since then I've gone a bit "MFI". As in.... hmmm, should I get the latest Nvidia hardware to have a go at my ATI spangled mate (2k machine all in black. Pretty nice. But Intel....)... or maybe get some bigger bookcases...... a couple of years ago the hardware would of won. Now I have a *lot* of books. Sigh... Still, I *still* have my bookcase of games. Unfortuantly haven't added to it for a while... damn GBA still taking my gaming time....

Still, I promised my laptop to my parents when they move to Spain, so a bit of hardware heaven coming my way soonish (next year some time) when I buy a new laptop (have gone off PC's).

On the above note, does anyone (think it was Raven, but might be wrong) have that link to the pretty cool laptop that was mentioned here a month or two back? Was about £1200, and was pretty top whack technically.

Oooh, Nirvana have started playing on the TV... (I'm on a week off here.... um, sorting out my bookcases and stuff )...

Cheers

Ps. Oh yes, and my favourite site at the minute : [href]www.barryboys.co.uk[/href] God that site had me laughing for hours (look in the forum).
