Well the game idea is your own idea. So you make it how you want to make it. If you want a 2D castle, load an image, maybe put the image on a plain, or just leave it as a screen. If you want a 3D castle, then learn how to make a 3D castle in a modelling package. A castle is quite easy to make.

You get a 3D modelling package off the internet. Anim8or is free. You do the tutorial that comes with it. Then you make a castle.

Learning some 3D modelling is always worthwhile, even if it's just to make a castle, it's always better to be able to make basic structures for testing purposes if nothing else.

Anim8or should do the trick, but I would suggest trying a lot of free modelling packages, and finding one that yields the best results for you - don't think for a second that if you don't understand the package right away, that other packages will just be the same. For example, vertex modelling is a major feature, and easy and straightforward vertex modelling functions can make a huge difference. That's why Milkshape got so popular - people could grasp the basics of 3D just by messing around with it. I'm thinking that Anim8or should have the same benefits, not bloated with features trying to compete with the big dogs (like 3DS Max, Lightwave, Maya) - I think this is the problem with Blender, it tries to do too much and leaves game modellers behind a little.

3D World Studio is apparently perfect for DBPro as it exports the model or world that can be directly loaded in to your program. Delgine DeleD is another program similar to 3DWS which is free and also supports light mapping and is also very good for creating worlds and support exporting DBPro DBO files. Both programs support the most important light mapping. And I do know that you get basic vertex editing in DeleD but not sure about 3DWS.

The above two are great for modelling worlds really but when it comes to creating single models such as weapons etc, you might look at a strong program like Milkshape which has excellent vertex editing tools. Anim8or is also a good program for editing single models but the exports are very limited.

The other two programs, 3DS Max and Blender.

Blender is free and has an awful lot of editing tools at your disposal. The interface in my opinion isn't very intuitive but according to the Blender community, once you get to grips with it, it's just as powerful as the top notch programs such as Max and Maya. Putting the awkward interface aside, Blender can do a lot from modelling single models to creating full worlds.

3DS Max is a top of the range 3D editor for anything. I'm quite familiar with it and its interface is easy to use. Max is available on a free student license but if you intend to publish your game/program then you will have to look into the massive £4000 price tag and think whether it's worth it. I've found that so far there is nothing Max cannot do with speed and easily.

There's a few to choose from so good luck with your choice.

I'm in the process of creating a plugin to build castles and stately homes and such from within DBP code. I havent got anything to show you or to upload yet, but I will in a week or two.

I'm creating the plugin as part of a larger project (a horror FPS) and I want to model a building based on this place

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdwU9nGsH7E

an example of some commands (CCK = Castle Construction Kit)

CCK USE BRICK TEXTURE INTERNAL 1

CCK USE BRICK TEXTURE EXTERNAL 2

CCK MAKE WINDOW framestyle, width, height

CCK MAKE DOOR framestyle, width, height

CCK MAKE WALL x, y, z, length, angle, windowframedata, doorframedata, gabledata

CCK MAKE SPIRAL STAIRCASE x, y, z, stepheight, stepspersweep, radius, windowframedata, doorframedata

CCK MAKE ROOM x, y, z, width, height

I'll start a thread in WIP soon with some examples, screen shots and a youtube video
