I'd post this at the Paint.Net forums, but I doubt I'd get a reliable answer.

I created a DDS image of 2 concentric circles, filled with a blue color. The background of the image is non-existent, as I was going to use this as a HUD. I save the image, but when I go to open it up again, the image is entirely blank. It's as if the circles don't exist.

Anybody know why this is and how I can correct it? I downloaded GIMP, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to clear the background and draw a circle in GIMP...

Does your paint program support alpha?
If so add an alpha channel to that layer then delete the back ground.
Save it with DX5 format in .dds
