This reference to DBPro's DLL support appears on the TGC web site. It tells me that not just -any- DLL can be used. Will I be able to use the various DLLs that come with Windows? What does this mean exactly?

Thanks

you can use any dll as long as it is not an ActiveX/COM dll like you create in VB. Most windows dll's can be used. Any dll you write in C++ or PureBASIC can be used.

Hi,

I was developing on Linux until I found this application the other night at the local computer store. I bought the DB version so I wouldn't be wasting money in case I didn't like it and it turned out that I liked it so much that I went back the next day and bought DBP.
So now that I am a happy camper....

Can you explain to me why ActiveX/COM DLLs cannot be used?

I am working on an app and the only source code I can find to give me ideas for this are ActiveX etc.

If this is the case can I make DirectX calls from within DBP?

I am looking to modify the PLAY ANIMATION function so that I can stream Video/Sound into the environment using web cams like a video teleconferencing function.

I have searched the forums but the threads on this were never followed up on and have since been tombstoned.

Thank you in advance for any help/sources.

Dave

Ahh yes... I read a lot about this today and never really understood why there are so many different languages for Winders.

Frankly it was a bit more confusing that trying to understand the DirectShow API.

All I want to do is stream network video onto a cube face in DBPro....

Sounds simple enough but then again I have never done it before and since there are all kinds of options I have no idea where to start on that one.

Does anyone have an idea about this?

I have thought about streaming to a file like blah.avi and then telling DBPro to go read it but I don't think that would work correctly.

There's no need to call DirectX from within DB. DBP is meant SPECIFICALLY for game development, if you want to make your own commands with support for things that don't already exist, use C++ and code a DLL.

I've been kicking around a web based multiplayer boardgame idea (shocker, another game idea) for years. I actually had a partially working model done totally in DHTML and PHP on the server. That plan ran out of steam fast. So here I am waiting axiously for DBPro box to arrive.

As I mentioned before, using DirectX networking api would require me to setup a dedicated game server and I'm really not ready to go there yet. Too expensive. I've had a lot of success using MS's XML dll to talk to a server script. Pass commands to the server script which handles database ins/outs and replies to the client. The database and script basically function like a sessionless/stateless "game server" app. Sounds wierd saying that, but it works pretty well.

P2P isn't going to work for this game. Can you think of any other ways to go client/server?

Why would you need a dedicated server (unless your going to have hundreds of people joining) ? Any fast machine could act very well as the sever, and depending on what you want to transmit, you could have a total of 2-16 (maybe 32) people joining at once.

We're hoping to eventually produce a product for the general public. If it goes as planned, we'll have a few hundred players on any given day. My current model (may be revised at anytime of course) has a web server managing the whole game experience. There is a lot of data which must be maintained in a central location. The database manages -everything-. It holds players info, game units info, maps info, chat sessions info, etc, etc. The clients talk to the database through one web script. The client apps are dumb portals. Follow? Can you think of anything easier? I'm open to suggestions.
