Catathrenia Exclusive Interview

Game Development

1 - 6 Months of hard work finally paying off. How did the name come about?

I still have some months to go until my next vacation

2 - You’re currently working as the producer of “Catathrenia:”. How does this game compare to other titles in the FPSC Games currently being developed?

Its similar to my older title "Euthanasia" in style but leans more towards the adventure genre and it is a lot more story driven. There aren't any similar titles being developed right now so it kind of stands alone at the moment.
However, catathrenia is in no way a very innovative game.

3 - Did you run into any difficulties while working on Catathrenia?

No, the game is designed not to cause any difficulties in its simplicity. However, you never know what FPSC might come up with.

4 - How did you oversee the progress of development?

Since I work alone 99% of the time its not that difficult.

5 - Were there any areas where you guys failed to see eye-to-eye in planning the game?

As I said, I work alone and I don't plan that much ahead. A rough idea of what I want to accomplish and go

6 - Are there any differences in the development structure of developers from FPSC and Yourself?

A lot of developers I talk to work very organized. They have timetables, predraw their maps, produce a gamedesign document or even plan maps in CAD software. I respect that.
However: My approach to something is just chaos...very productive chaos but still chaos.

7 - - Do see you more of these co-development projects on the horizon?

I don't see where you are getting this "co-development" thing from. Doomster helps out with the games starter application and a couple of scripts (none yet but he will do a cool healthsystem later down the road)
Other than that, I talk to friends about the stuff I do and their response might influence my work but I do work alone.

8 - You seem to be taking full advantage of a wide range of media and delivering the information essential to cultivating a fan community. How does this feel?

I don't really think I do this. Catathrenia has no fans that I'm aware of.

9 - What else do you remember about how video games influenced your childhood and personal development?

Videogames where always a big thing in my childhood...maybe because 3D games where coming up and growing at that time and everything felt new and exciting.
Back then, simple things where amazing. Like being able to destroy a barrel or drive a car. Standart nowadays of course.
Except for often imagining playing a videogames storyline with my toys in the gardens I don't have any cool storys.

10 - How do you go on to release a title? What do you do before planning a game?

As mentioned above...I dont really "plan" it. Once its done, it gets a release on Moddb and on The Gamecreators forum aswell as some side forums and webblogs. Everything else happens by itself.

11- What process do you undertake on Game Concept?

Got an idea in my head, doing something that looks slightly like it, ending up with something not even remotely close in quality but still somewhat okay -> release.
I don't really get what you mean by concept here.

12 - What process do you take on Game Design?

Well, same thing as above I guess.

13 Can you give us a brief of your kind of Game Design Document from the foundations to the ending?

*insert blank page here*

14: Alot of titles do not get released because of so many reasons, you are an expert in this area, Why do you think alot of users in the community do not finish their titles and what can you

tell them?

Don't try to do a big awesome game with huge storyline and global conflicts. In fact: Don't even get any inspiration from modernday videogames. Look back at old titles if you run short of ideas.
Whenever your idea is even remotely based on your latest X-Box title...drop it.
If you think of something you would like to develop in FPSC it is important that you A) Know that your concept will work in fpsc (its not, it isn't because FPSC is too weak to support your awesome epic storyline it is because you are too weak to defy the odds of FPSC)
B) You already gathered the basic media and knowledge to get started right away C) You don't just want to produce pretty screenshots to get a pat on the back from the community and D) you are aware that your end result will be an amateur game with flaws that might not run on every system. Dont be a perfectionist.

15 - Do you desgn everything yourself or as part of a team?

Shouldn't you ask that before asking about my team? Ah! Screw it: Myself.

16 - How long does it take you to release a title?

between 10 hours and 2 years. Its true, check my former games development times.

17 - Can we expect a sequel of Catathrenia?

If it sells more than 500 copys and people actually care about the storyline: yes.

18 - What are Wolf's future ambitions?

I try to be a semiprofessional indievideogametist once I'm 25. So only have to do some part time job and get the rest from my hobby. This would be paradise.

19 - Who's work do you like inthe community apart from yourself?

Doomster's Packs, Bond1's media, EAI's guns, Cosmics models, ASTEK's games, rolfy's style, MaHo's Abstract Game, Ertlov's Austrian Accent and Bugsy's citylevels. And a lot more actually.

20 - Are there any other suprises we can expect from the Wolf?

of course But I won't tell... 'would ruin the surprise.
