Time to introduce my project I guess I'm working on a side scroller action game called Knight Of Valor. It is a hack & slash game but you see it from the side. Here are 2 screenshots:

The screeshots are rather dark but I still have to add torches, shadows, blood, ... .

I also have a few Q's. How do you handle animations on multiple enemies (same model). I started using the command instance object, but you can't change the animation seperatly in other words they all do the same animation at the same time. Then I tried clone object, but this deforms my models and the frame rate drops by 50%. So that's a serious problem

Then what the best way to do shadows? Just draw a "shadow" sprite on the ground?

Any other smart tricks to get the fps up?

c+c is welcome, not that there is much to comment on yet

I seriously suggest that you email the DarkBASIC people (mike@thegamecreators.com) with your model which doesn't work with CLONE OBJECT and some appropriate code and ask for him to see if he can fix it as that is your best option.

maybe you could load the object multiple times, but that would drop the fps way down

I tried loading them seperatly but then the fp's drop to 14 fps
but it is fun to see them do what they have to

Thanks for the comments and sorry for the dark screenshots, when you play it it's all clear though. But I'll light it up a bit

@Uberwiggett
I will release an alpha version, but the FPS are still to low atm. The walking animation causes a serious FPS drop and I don't know how I can make up for this speed loss. I must be wasting some speed elsewere cause the Darkmatter models are low poly already :/

@MonkeyThief
Thanks And I will put some outdoor scenes in it for sure!
I'll try and create one this week-end (part of it at least ).

Here is a screenshot for all of you who could not see the others clearly, but in the game it will be a little bit more dark to set the mood, but then I'll add torches to the wall:

looking good! this screen reminded me of something someone said over on garagegames:

"if you remove all the crates from your game, it will be (scientifically speaking, of course) infinitely better than Doom, on the Crate Review System: [href]www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.html[/href]. Currently your StC score is 0."

@hexgear
lol, thats a nice rating system but this is not the start of the level, ok? It takes 20 minutes to get to this crate!

Better hide them in the next screenshots, or I could replace them by trees :p

Most monitors have brightness buttons on them. Press the one with the + on it and everything is see-able . Good looking game, and nice models!

Do you bite your thumb at me sir?

No Akari I don't think I'm going to sell it. Probably going to be freeware if it ever gets finnished.

And Northern_Fist, what's the brightness of your screen??
Were you able to see the lighter screenshot (a bit above the forest screenshot)?

Actually, I could see the second to last screenshot rather well. I was simply popping a humorous comment on the other backened screenshots - please take no offense.
I did check my monitor, and everything appears to be in order.

nah they were dark for me, but not too dark, i could see them clearly, itsjust different monitors have different levels, my other monitor is pitch black in shadows in counter strike,whereas the monitor i use now is bright as day in those shadows, it just depends on teh monitor you're using.

My monitor does from pitch black square, to so white it's un-seeable. Cool forest level, really good atmosphere.

Uberwiggett robx, I know what you're talking about. It really sucks when you can't see in the shadows because of your monitor in CS It's better now with my new screen, but still. It's such a big advantage when you can turn up the brightness.

@Hamish
thanks

I'm working on the shadows now, but pff it's hard to get good shadows. Realtime shadow takes up to much of the speed and using a texture as shadow isn't working out nice either

I use a plane, put a texture on it with a color key, but then I want to make the plane a bit transparent en that's when it goes wrong, suddenly the the part that should be left out by the color key gets visible again. Anyone have a better idea?

I'm putting the project on hold, for the moment DBpro can't handle the way my models are animated. Because of this I can't load and animate enough models at the same time without dropping to 10FPS and that's just not a fun to work with I'll continue working on KoV as soon as the new update is released (it should fix the animation problem).

I just thought I should let you all know

Golden Axe does bring up some good memories doesn't it Maybe I should make it some sort of Golden Axe remake. Maybe if I can find an artist I can let the original models and enemies come into play.

And helix, I have no idea. I do remember the turtle village but don't remember how to beat and if I ever beat the dragon, sorry
