I have a TGA file that has alpha-transparency. I want to texture an object with it to make the object appears semi-translucent according the the texture. Is this possible? How do I do it?

load up the texture, texture and object and try a combination of the following:

set object transparency obj, 1
OR
set object transparency obj, 2
(there are differences!)
(or just use Set Object with the correct switches)

Now, there's always the "Set Alpha Mapping On" - command. Seems a bit odd to me, but hey.. it's there.

If none of these really work. revert to simple ghosting. There are three modes for that, btw! 0 = normal? looks a lot like Real alpha now... (before it seemed like additive) 1 = substractive, makes things dark. 2 = Superbright? Dunno. But it's different!

and be sure to tell me if you figure out the "right" way to do it. I have managed to make my objects look good, but that's just after some tweaking and such.

SET OBJECT TRANSPARECNY 1, 1

... seems to work. However, there are issues, and I'll be filing a bug report. On my Radeon system, it works as expected except if you to "SET OBJECT CULL 1,0". What happens in that case is not all of the back faces get drawn, but the ones that do seem to be correct.

On my laptop system, I get a strange grey grid over the translucent parts, and I get the same problem with culling.

Check out the bug reports forum later for some screenshots...

Thanks,

Ed

if you want an object that has a transparent texture... AND the entire thing to be semi-transparent... you cant!

before people start arguing... you cant!... there is "set alpha mapping on"... but there is currently a [confirmed] bug with alpha mapping and transparent textures!

might have to wait till U6 comes out before this will work!

I saw that... but that's not what I'm trying to do. I just want the texture to control the translucency all by itself.

Thanks for the tip tho'... it can save people a lot of headaches wondering why it's not working...
