Last Updated: 17/06/2012

ChangeLog (Fixes/Patches To Date):
- Invoke level for Launcher and Game Executable fixed.
Description: Currently the distributable launcher and some other game files are only required to be invoked at a non-admin level. This will cause issues for those who aren't admin as the launcher needs to read/write from the directory.
Expected Fix Date:17/06/2012 (Completed)

Looks cool, I might purchase this simply because you can run videos in the background and SGLauncher doesn't allow you to do that. Would it be possible to add a video which shows off all the features or an example menu, I need to make sure it can do everything I need if I'm going to purchase it.

I would like a video example of this as well.

I was just about to purchase this until I read the website

Quote: "Free updates until the next major revision (2.0)... (Currently 1.3)"

FPSC itself has always had free updates so I'm not going to start doing this just for a tool that goes with it.

Sure you are on v1.3 now but you could upgrade to v2.0 at anytime so then a bunch of people benefit from the update whilst others feel ripped off.

Personally I don't like the pay for updates policy.

Looks good and best of luck with this, Sting. We hope you do well.

Quote: "Personally I don't like the pay for updates policy."

Then don't buy it. We know a lot of software developers (individuals and companies) that do this and have done well. This method is particularly used when the developer is spending a large amount of time adding features for a new version. Usually the developer may offer a "discounted" price for current purchasers. Besides, if the application works wonders and the support is solid, then there is no harm buying a newer version. It is called "supporting a software developer".

Just because FPSC provides free updates does not mean the rest of us developers need to follow suit with software we develop. Not everything in life is "free".

I won't. I'm sure other people will so thats fine.

The marketing for this needs to be made clearer though. In some places it says 'free updates' or 'free access to future updates' and thats not the case which is misleading.

@Ertlov - Sent. Thankyou.

@Marc Steene - Sure, before Monday I will have a demo video online showcasing the features available, in the meantime if you have any questions in particular please feel free to ask away.

@Blackfox/s4Real - Thanks for the support.

@Nomad Soul - I honestly don't know how to answer that without coming across as arrogant or similar. Any product that you purchase you purchase for that particular version. For example, Goldwave (audio editor) if you purchase Version 4 it doesn't mean you get Version 5 also. You get up to 4.9 or whatever under 5 they want to but a new major revision is almost like a new software. Obviously I would be developing a version 2 from the ground up but for now there are at least 6 minor revisions to complete. There may not even be a version 2, it just depends on how Version 1 evolves.

The keyword here for me is 'Evolve'. I want InterFPSC to evolve with the help of the community and what they want/need. I could have designed a game launcher which is for any engine but I chose FPSC specifically (even though it is a margin for my target market) but I like the FPSC community, I have been with FPSC since EA and I want to keep it niche and specific to FPSC rather than a flood of other markets. This enables me to develop and evolve the software specifically to the communities needs. I am all ears when it comes to which direction InterFPSC takes!

Thanks to all who have vested interest thus far.

Danny

If its of use to you then buy it...its that simple....I think its one of the best things about FPSC is its community who create add ons like this for such low cost and if by purchasing this you help the developer then thats even better, for the developer it adds to their own learning experience in a business sense at a lot of levels not to mention the warm fuzzy feeling it will give him to feel the support and love from his fellow FPSC users whom he obviously thought of first when designing this.

Nice job.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

Thankyou Rolfy. I couldn't have asked for a better response. The FPS Creator community (albeit has had it's fair share of ups n downs) in general is a close-knit community and even though I rarely ask for anything, it gives me great pleasure to know I am helping out where I can.

Here's to evolving InterFPSC and future projects

@Sting

I think this is a really good product by the way. It combines lots of nice features from other FPSC tools and adds some more which will be valuable.

I would have purchased this myself if it were not for the update system but thats just a personal choice and does not detract from the quality of the product in anyway.

I thought it was worth pointing out as I didnt pick this up until looking at the website so I guess other people might not realise.

Good luck and hope you keep improving it.

I noticed that, too, Nomad Soul. I am now reluctant to buy until much later when the the newer versions come out. Of coure, ~$11.00 is not a bad price to begin with but will that be the price for an update?

There are only two pieces of software that I own that I have to always pay for a major update. The updates are of course less than the new price. I usually wait about 4 or 5 years before I purchase a new update or until there are some really major changes I like and want. You notice that I said 4 or 5 years. These have been around a very long time. I wonder how long this app will be around? Even "Signs (last update #5) which was quite good and quite popular no longer is available. Just saying.

Again, I agree with Nomad that this wrapper looks very good and will be worth it for those who purchase it.

Thanks Nomad.

Terry, I didn't realise such a thing would cause a bit of controversy... I only stipulated that to bring the V1 price down to £6.99, I didn't want to sell say 10 copies only and end up doing 2-3 years work for it.

To be honest I cannot see InterFPSC going beyond V1 as there is only so much you can do with a game launcher. There are a couple of huge features that I wanted to include, which I could do still but the price wouldn't justify the time, if you want I could do away with the 2.0 limitation and proceed with add-ons? That will keep the base price low and will still have new features on updates but add-ons will be available for extra.

Alternatively, I could raise the initial price of V1 and have unlimited updates and add-ons free?

My main ambition is to keep InterFPSC affordable for new and experienced users but offer a premium product. However, I have to try and justify the products value and I would hate to undervalue what InterFPSC can do.

I am always interested in people's opinions and what is best for the community.

Hi Danny

Firstly, I like what I see so far.

Secondly, a feature request:
I am busy with a large game and I, like some other members here (Meows, e.g.), am looking for a launcher that allows the player to launch one game directly after completing the first, and then launch 3 after completing 2, etc.

I would love to hear what your thoughts are concerning the possibility of adding such a feature.

regards
Eugene

Hi Eugene,

This is certainly possible and a great feature to implement into InterFPSC.

I can say from the off that this feature is possible because it has already been done with a few games (not with this build of InterFPSC). I will look over the next couple of days a way to implement this and if I can find a way to integrate it into InterFPSC I certainly will.

As it stands at the moment (1.19 not beta 1.20) I am unsure of any ways to trigger an executable call from the engine itself, alternatively if FPSC users could find a way to 'write' to some kind of file say an INI file then the launcher engine could read which game (level) to execute.

I am hoping someone from the modding area could help me out with this. A runexe command or 'write ini' command updating the current level number, this could then quite easily be integrated into InterFPSC. Thanks for the feedback, let me know what you think.

It would require a bit of manual effort for your users, but something you can do is have them add a text file to the last level zip file in the levelbank folder that your launcher looks for. It could be Launcher.txt or something and inside is a string that specifies the next game to run. When FPSC runs, it will extract all the files in each level's zip file whether they are part of the game or not, so you could add a file there easily that your launcher could look for and read. Then, it's a matter of watching the processes that are running so that it can wait for FPSC-GAME.exe to close, then launch the next one. It's how I'd attempt this.

Good luck! Very interesting project!

It compiled! Ship it!

@Section812 - That's quite generous thankyou. I have been following your developments, however I have not had much time for FPSC as of late, I was more set on getting InterFPSC completed.

I will download your mod at some point this week and have a play with it. If you could drop me an email (below) when you're not too busy that would be great.

RPGmod and RPG EdMod both have a write2file command that will write to a file. The developer can put any information that is needed into this file. The only thing is that the file is written to a specific folder (rpgfiles) at this time and it is hard coded. I could add a flag that will tell it to write to the root directory of the game if that would make it easier.

Addendum:

I've added the ability to write to either the game root directory or to any directory path (including file name) on the hard drive using a valid path string.

I hope to get it tested in a day or two. Actually the update is not put into RPGmod as yet, but it is in RPG EdMod. I'm sure Ched80 will get it put in for the next version. But, I'll get something to you for you to test.

Maybe have a look into that I'm using Microsoft essentials and that don't give many false positives as a rule.

@s4real - Thanks for the heads up, it maybe because it's just a standalone executable zipped up?

I'll take a look into that, I can reassure you there is nothing malicious inside it, however if push comes to shove I will just release a flash version instead.
