As soon as I use the SET OBJECT EMISSIVE command, the damn thing lights up like it's bonfire night all over again. I would have expected RGB(1,1,1) to be as near as dammit no Emissive whatsoever...but it turns the top of my object white, although the bottom behaves itself a bit better.

Any ideas.

Some things to consider.

the default ambient is 50 try setting it to 30 or 70 and see what it reveals. the diffusion is another aspect to try if you want to colour an object.

a coloured object compared to a textured object might show different results.

try some combos and come back with an update.

The default light in the scene is probably still there pointing down, try using HIDE LIGHT 0 before setting the emissive.
