The virtual walkthrough program I made works fine on desktops but not on laptops. All computers have Windows 7 (Not sure if the laptops have service pack 1 or not). I also built the program executable with both DBP versions 7.6 and 7.7 (to bypass the W7 SP1 problem) but this doesn't seem to work. I tried the program on two desktops (works as expected) and 4 laptops (none work). I also tried installing DirectX9.0c as was mentioned on the DarkDynamics/Physics Forum Category under "Dark Physics Demo's not working". If anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be or is experiencing something similar, please post. Thank You

Could be an unsupported resolution, or shader version, or lack of video memory. Laptops usually have worse video cards. Some laptops have 2 video cards, where it's always using integrated video unless a "game" is launched and then the Nvidia/ati card activates.

Hello Daniel and Mage,

Thankyou for your interest. I will get back to you on uploading the project. I used a resolution of 800,600,32 which should be supported by all computers. I haven't used any shaders or built in shadows (not yet) so I don't think it should be a problem with video memory. I did use Dark Physics functions however, but my understanding is that it doesn't require NVIDIA based graphics cards. The desktops use Geforce and Intel based GPU's, Intel's not being NVIDIA based. It still works fine in this case. Two of the four laptops are within a year old, and I think one of them has an ATI graphics card...I'd have to get back to you on the specs. Thanks again for your help.

I've just recently answered a question elsewhere. Try the DirectX 9 redist installation package on the netbooks. It doesn't interfere with other DirectX installations, just makes DX9 apps run.

Hello WLGfx,

I tried your method, and got further, but the program still crashed, which I wasn't expecting this time, because the netbook was running xp and dx9 to begin with. I'm still unsure as to why programs will work on Windows 7 for desktops and not laptops. Thank you all for your input, this is as far as I can take this. I will only focus on desktop apps and await a new update for DBP...maybe it will address this issue and others like it. Take Care

The other solution from the other forum mentioned the actual drivers for the graphics were not even installed.

Hopefully you will get somewhere with it because it's always nice to test out your own creations on a desktop and a netbook.

I do all my coding on a laptop and now and then I test them out for speed on both the desktop pc and my missus netbook.

'Crash' with what error message?

@WLGfx I checked the display driver in the device manager and it is up to date. I also ran dxdiag, which gave me the display capabilities; it runs 32 bit depth images. There were two resolutions available for the netbook. One of them was 640x480, so I reset Set Display Mode accordingly and rebuilt the program.
@IanM I think the crash occurs when Dark Clouds starts up. I didn't write down the message error, but I seem to remember part of it having to do with MOD darkclouds.dll. I thought that all of the .dll references are included when the executable is built.
Thanks again for your interest.

Hello Phaelax,

There are four laptops and one netbook I tried the program on. None of them are mine. I don't own a laptop. I'll try my program with a different building model on all the computers. If I still have the same error messages, I'll upload the program for you and any others that are interested to try out. If you all still have the same problems that I am having, then I will consider uploading the code (or at least discussing it). As a general rule though (I think), as long as the hardware for a given computer is compatable with a program, it should run fine, assuming the code is sound. If the program runs fine on one computer, ceteris paribus (all things being equal), it should run fine on another. Thanks again for all of your posts.

My next guess would be the version of DX on the laptops. Unless you specifically installed DX 9c yourself on the laptops, I've found no computer seems to come with it.

@basjak Two questions: Which version(s) of Windows do you have on your laptops/netbooks? Do you use Dark Clouds at all?
@Phaelax DX version 11 on the Windows 7 laptops and DX version 9.0c on the netbook. The netbook gave the more specific error message which had something to do with "MOD darkclouds.dll", although I didn't write it down and to basjak's inquiry I am unable to answer at this time because I had deleted the program from the laptops/netbook after they didn't work. Right now I'm in the middle of updating another building model which I will use in place of the one which I plan to use in the end. When I'm finished, I will upload the executable and media for you all to try out if you wish. I'll keep it at 640x480x32 resolution because I'll probably wind up using the netbook (if it turns out being that DBP programs only run on DX9.0c when used on laptops/netbooks). If basjak is right and can get it to run on Windows7 DXv11, I should then be able to increase the resolution and replace the building models for the final version of the program. I'm hoping that the problem lies with just adjusting some settings for Dark Clouds to make it compatible with lower end graphics cards(the ones on the laptops/netbooks). If that's the case, I could use some help. The only reason I mention Dark Clouds is because of the MOD darkclouds.dll reference when the program crashes. I'll keep you all updated and post the project when it's completed. By the way; is the limit for any program upload 50 megabytes? I think the program is around that size when zipped. Thanks again for your support.

Hello everyone,

As promised, I'm uploading the VR program with a different building model for you to test out if you wish. It's under 10MB when zipped and contains the executable and the media resources. I've only tested it on my desktop so far. If you'd like, feel free to test it out and relay any feedback you may have. On the controls: All movement is with the mouse. The wheel will move you forward and back, a wheel click will stop you. The left and right mouse buttons will increase/decrease lighting respectively. Pressing both buttons simultaneously will switch to object select mode (haven't tested it out on this particular model yet). This mode will allow you to move/rotate objects, but I didn't include any objects to manipulate for this particular model yet. Pressing both buttons again will return you to user movement mode. Please run the project as an administrator if you wish to take snapshots of wherever you're standing. You can do this within the program by pressing "p" on the keyboard while in movement mode. I want to thank DBPro users "John H" for the mouse wheel code and "enderleit" for the screen capture code. I would also like to thank the creators of the DBP tutorials and their extensions. I was able to integrate their code samples into my own. Without these contributions, my longtime goal of creating this program to begin with would have been unattainable. I would finally like to thank all of you for your continued interest and help. Both of these are greatly appreciated and I value your knowledge and experience. I wish you the best of luck on all of your projects and hope I'll be able to help you in return one day. Take Care.

It crashed and I was sent to an Nvidia Drivers screen for an Nvidia 600 which I don't own?

It's more worrying that this could be a spam attempt.

If it's sending you to the nVidia site then the Physics plugin doesn't have the PhysX stuff installed and is not running in software mode...

@Pincho I had the same problem when running the program on laptops. This doesn't occur on the desktop. If what WLGfx says is true, I think the DBP executable automatically will redirect the end user to NVIDIA's website for the purpose of offering a solution to the PhysX compatability problem. I didn't (nor would I know how to) program into DBP a way to redirect the end user to a website if their hardware was incompatable with my program. I wasn't aware that you or anyone would perceive this as a spam attempt. I wasn't completely supprised when I received the popup though, as (I think) nVidia and PhysX are partnered. But, as it has been mentioned elsewhere on these forumns, an Nvidia graphics card shouldn't be necessary for DarkPhysics to work properly. I have an Intel based GPU on my desktop and the program runs fine. @WLGfx I'm relatively new to programming. I installed the Dark Physics Plugin but wasn't aware of any additional PhysX installation requirements. Also, what other modes can the executable be run in if not software mode?

Wow, That's great!

So the problem has nothing to do with the Windows or DirectX version then. It must have something to do with Dark Clouds or Dark Physics. WLGfx mentioned that Dark Physics has to have the 'PhysX stuff installed and be run in software mode'. I'm thinking this might be part of the problem on my end. Do you know if the end user has to install some PhysX software on their computer regardless of whether or not they have an nVidia GPU? My guess is that any DBP program using Dark Physics won't run properly unless this is the case. Also, would there be a similar requirement if the DBP program uses Dark Clouds? I think this would be good to know for anyone writing programs using these plugins. One last thing; did the controls seem "intuitive enough". My goal is to make the walk though easy enough for anyone to use. Thank you for your time and any additional feedback you might have.

it worked on my laptop:

spec:

CPU : intel Core i3-370M.
Graphics : intel HD Graphics
Ram : 3 GB
other specs are not important for this program.

@basjak
Thanks for your feedback. I'm leaning closer to thinking the problem might reside in the CPU or GPU on the laptops. They might not be powerful enough. Maybe the CPU has to be an Intel i3 or > or an AMD equivalent. Any other comments for the walkthrough itself is appreciated. Thankyou

yes, if physX is run in software mode you have to install physx drivers, if it is run in hardware mode you need drivers+nvidia graphics card.

Also, to run any dbpro executable you need to have directX 9.0c installed. It doesn't matter if dx11 or dx10 is already installed.

Quote: " Maybe the CPU has to be an Intel i3 or > or an AMD equivalent"

it doesn't have to be. The slower the cpu the slower it will run, but it will run

Based on basjak gpu specs the same goes for gpu.

I think the problem is almost solved. I will attempt to download the physX drivers and make sure the program is run in software mode, although I'm not sure how to check if it is in software mode or not. Thanks again.

I downloaded and installed the following two programs: dxwebsetup and PhysX-9.12.0213-SystemSoftware. My program still crashes, which leads me to believe I'm not running in software mode. How can I check this? Thankyou.

if you don't have directx 9.0c installed and you are running windows 7 or vista you'll need to install DirectX 9 SDK

I think physX chooses software mode automaticaly if you don't have nvidia card and hardware mode if you do, so that probably isn't the issue here

Hello again,
The exact error message is: "QuadrantHouseWalkthrough has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." There then is a "Close Program" button which I click to close the program. I noticed in the Dark Physics documentation that a particular file needs to be downloaded for Physx to work properly. I thought this would have been taken care of with the other file I mentioned having downloaded and installed. Also, I have DX9.0c installed through dxwebsetup.exe.
Any ideas on how to proceed?

When you get a message like that it can me literally anything. Probably some memory corruption. I suggest you to start removing functionalities from your game a test the exe after each removed functionality. At one point the exe should work. Then start adding removed functionalities to find the faulty one. That's the best advice I can think of

Thanks to everyone who has been following this post. I have added the code for the QuadrantHouseWalkthrough in a new topic, "Virtual Walkthrough Code".http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=198070&b=1 Still having some difficulties but trying to work them out. Now that the code is posted, anyone who wants to use it or improve upon it for their own purposes is welcome. So far DBP user basjak hasn't found anything wrong with it. I know I said I'd post when I succeed, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and need all the help I can get. This is certainly a challenge. Take Care.

Hello gymcoder,
Just to clarify, are you speaking of the Dark Basic Pro extensions or user created plugins. If it is the former, and Dark Clouds is the one in question, its icon on the startup screen displays very subtly, but if you type in one of its commands, it should display in blue. This is how you'll know if its installed. The same could be said for any other extension in question.
