hey everyone, i dont suppose anyone could tell me how to get my textures shiny and/or reflective, this is for the texture of a gun in a fps. I made the model in max, and in that it looks great! but not in DBpro.

does it have something to do with sphere mapping? as the demo for that has the ship reflecting the back drop.

all help welcome

pete

There are different methods for achieving this effect. The simplest (and probably fastest) is SET OBJECT SPECULAR. Used in conjunction with SET OBJECT SPECULAR POWER, you can change (obviously) the specular of your object. If you do not already know, "specular" refers to the shininess. It's not actually reflection like a mirror, but just that tiny "glint" of light that you see on your object. This will make your object appear lustrous, perhaps a bit like metal.

A second method is to use sphere mapping. Use the command SET SPHERE MAPPING ON to apply sphere mapping. Sphere mapping will make your object reflective like a mirror like in the spaceship demo. There is a downside: sphere mapping isn't actual real-time reflection. I mean it doesn't make your object reflect the scene around it. Instead, you have to supply an image texture which will be mapped on to your object. It is good if you use it on an object which won't move much, or if you don't really care about accurate reflection. But sphere mapping isn't just for reflection, it can produce other interesting effects as well.

The third method is to use reflection shading. Use the command SET REFLECTION SHADING ON. This will make your object reflect the scene around it. It is the slowest method, however.

From what I'm guessing, you would probably want to use SET OBJECT SPECULAR for what youre doing.

Oh and I don't know much about this, but I think you can use vertex/pixel shaders to create custom effects, like metallacy.

thanks for the help, but the only one that seems to work is the sphere mapping itself, and thats not really waht i want. i tried the specular power and nothing happened so i put the power up to 100 and then 1000 but still nothing. dont know if its because the object is hiden at the start and only appears when you press a certain key
