I'm new to FPS and figuring out the way the game build accesses the texture and meshes. Does anyone know if it is better to have a single texture file with multiple discrete regions for different meshes or is it better to have separate texture files for each mesh, in terms of CPU load?

Your CPU isn't what you should be worrying about when it comes to loading. If you have a fast hard drive, then go for multiple textures. I do it all the time for my guns. No issues thus far.

It can only be to your advantage if you can texture multiple models and have them all running with a single texture file (less memory used).
When I find that I have lots of 'spare' space left over on my texture files I sometimes give those models texture variations which creates more use for the models.

All the best of luck.

For quite a while now I have used this as a reference for modular design. It is really helpful.
