hello everyone! i was just wondering if you can convert mp3s to .mid to use in games. the reason for that is because when i downloaded the timesplitters music i really wanted to use it in my distant future spectacular computer game. (not too distant. just until i work out how to code better. alot better).i was also wondering if anyone knows were i could get some .mid files to use in games (probably distant ones too)

thanks if you can help
if you can't then bugger off!
Axel

Nah, don't bother trying to convert .mp3 to .mid, it is possible (haha Raven ) - you can convert the .mp3 into a wave file, then there's programs that analyse the sound wave and convert it to a .mid file. This is only really used for analysing notation though, not really a conversion.
Don't know if your aware that .mid files are more similar to tracker songs, they don't use sampled sounds, rather rely on your sound cards hardware or any midi equipment you might have connected (like a synthisizer). .Mids are really small and convenient, but getting good tunes is tough, most are fairly badly put together. The best .mid tunes I've heard were from Dr. Awesomes website - check out TGC newsletter 10 for an interview with the very man and website link - on his website you'll find several .mid songs. Be sure to ask him before using any of them though, sure he would'nt mind, but you'll probably end up using a lot of them - so a website link, or maybe even a full screen add in your game would keep him happy.

load music "song.mp3",1
loop music 1

The only advantage to .mid is a smaller filesize when you release the game, DBP can play .mp3 quite happily and provided the filesize is not excessive (perhaps re-encode it to 32 or 64 kbit/sec if it is) then the extra filesize over .mid wont be a problem.

.mid sounds aweful no matter how good the track is, on most sound cards the instruments are all out of tune with each other.

actually no. few years back I managed to get this program/emulator called Yamaha Synthesizer XG - something. They had different versions of it... anyways, It totally enhanced the experience. It was almost like listening to mp3's or good tracker music. (as that's what it was most likely). Then there were those midi files that supported stuff used in the SXG and Those sounded unbelievably good. Funny thing, they also took a lot more space. ;D

shame I don't have it anymore. It's not a free proggy, you know.

@Axelman, I tried using a wav->midi converter myself - the results were awful, but you can try it yourself by downloading Sound2Midi

All the Yamaha Synthesizer XG software does is adds all the new midi voices to your computer. Some of them are alright but if you're using midi in your game it will sound different on someone else's computer (unless they have the same midi voices).
I've never tried converting wav to midi ... sounds messy.

There's also Direct Music, dunno if anyones got that working with DBPro, but it's a good way to take .mid files and turn them into something more listenable.

don't use mp3s. There are some licensing issue with them. ogg vorbis is a much better format and its license free.
