DarkBASIC Professional Discussion / How do you save a Darkbasic Pro program so you can open/edit it on a different PC?

I can't seem to figure out quite how to save my game so that I can open it on a different PC and work on it. Obviously I am saving it and have the encrypt options set to NO. It doesn't seem to matter how I save it, exe, standalone, media, whatever I still can't open with DarkBasic Pro on another computer.

I have the free version of DB Pro by the way.

Also one Windows XP computer can execute the program fine, another Windows XP computer comes up with a "Runtime error 3002 - Cannot load sound file in like 562" which I find odd.

I also haven't been able yet to make a stand alone executable from DB Pro no matter what I set the options to.

Are you saying you're trying to open the executable file in DBPro? If you are then no, that will never work. You'd have to copy across the entire project folder and open up the '.dbpro' file.

Sounds like you copied across the executable but not all the media or atleast didn't maintain the file structure. Are you referencing your media files via relative or absolute paths? You should always use relative.

Yes, that's exactly what I am doing. I have a project folder right on my desktop for my game. So, this project folder is called "Azz-droids" and inside that folder is my .dbpro file as well as my media folder.

The code inside of my program (the dbpro) reads the files from within the media folder ie.. load sound "media\zapsound.wav",1 and this works fine on the computer which I am programming the game on.

But I am copying the entire "Azz-droids" folder to a flash drive and then placing that same folder on a different PC. When I install DB pro on the 2nd computer and try to open project folder "Azz-droids" and open the dbfile, it gives some an actual DarbBasic Pro Editor error "Could not find main include file, the path stored in the include file is invalid or missing. You will have to add the file manually." So, if i try dragging the dbpro file from the project folder right into DBpro, it just gives info about my program only, it's not the actual code.

Also, if I try to run the application executable from within the project folder on computer 2, it gives me the run time error 3002 and says that it can't load the sound files.. even though the line which it gives the error is halfway through the sound files and it loads all my png graphics files just fine. Again, these is no such errors, same exact project fold, same exact media folder and files set up exactly the same way on computer A.

I don't pretend to understand why it doesn't work.

I do wonder if any of this stuff would work if I actually purchased DB Pro, but I dunno.

How exactly should I be saving the program when I save it on the original computer where I have been programming this game? I've been saving at with the Media selection (options are exe, media, installer, and alone. I gave made sure that my media is not compressed or encrypted, but still no cigar on other computers.

Like I say, I'd also love to be able to figure out how to make a stand alone executable when I complete a project.

I just don't understand why I'm having such problems/difficulties with DB Pro in this area.

Zaxtor go on youtube and search for dcforemanuk and watch his DarkPrinciples videos... Especially the ones relating to setting up a project and including files... You might not be adding files to your projects by the sounds of it as they will not be added to the standalone... And its / not \...

Also look for something called TDK Tutorials on this here forum at the bottom search this forum box...

We have a DBPRO NEWCOMERS board you should be posting in there...

From now on, I will post in the noob section.. I just found it.

And I didn't start writing the code as "load image "media\zap.png" all on my own or because I am an idiot who is brand new to computers. I saw it used right here by someone on these forums showing their code and they had been here quite some time. Furthermore, if you go to your computer, right click on any picture or song on your computer, and then go to PROPERTIES, I think that you'll see that in that properties window it shows that items location as something along the lines of C:\Users\MyName\Documents (notice the backslash for an items location right on your PC). But whatever, both / and \ seem to work the same for Darkbasic applications, at least for me.. either works just fine. I'm just saying, I'm not so sure when you tell me by the way, it's / not \ (like I am some sorta dope) - that you are so correct, especially when I see items on my own computer described BY THE COMPUTER with a \ (backslash) in its properties, and not a / (forward slash) as you demand that it should be {shrugs}

do not fret we all make typos ... Trust me I know alllll there is to know about typos >_<

Glad you got some help just ask on¡ we do not bite and the more stupid questions you ask (we all ask them) the wiser you shall become... But do try to apply common sense before asking hehe...

I have asked for help here plenty of times pal, especially last summer when I was just starting out with DBClassic. Quite a few people were very helpful then and I was always very appreciative and was always very willing to give them many thanks.

But when I am already frustrated with this problem.. and I read remarks like..

And then giving me incorrect information and referring me to watch Youtube beginner videos on DarbBasic Pro, that doesn't come off as someone "just trying to help"

If you were trying to help me sooo much, and if my questions were such "noobish" and "beginner" questions that some beginner level videos should answer for me, surely you could have offered me help easier then the attacks (and the no help what-so-ever I might add)

Perhaps I am naive, or perhaps it's because you are from the other side of the world that I live on, but I still think you were trying much harder to attack me then to help me out. - I of course, could be wrong.. I have been wrong before. If that's the case, then please take my most sincere "thank you" to the bank.

Okay...

About the stand alone exe, I have this thread also on that topic of making a stand alone exe which I still haven't resolved.

I followed Dimis's suggestion of placing the project folder right on the desktop and then the media files just in a media folder inside. As you can see, he is the one who advised me of the load image "media\picture",1 vs the old way of just load image "picture" and having the media files in the project folder with all the media files right there and not in their own media folder.

It worked once. Then ever since, it hasn't worked.

{shrugs}

I assume that when you compile and save your program in DBPro and have the setting as "EXE" that it is supposed to make a stand alone executable.

I don't know. I NEVER had these problems with DB Classic at all, and I'm doing things the same way that always worked with DBClassic. I do not however want to go back to DBClassic after using DBPro, lol.

Anyhow, thanks for the help you are trying.. much appreciated. I am beyond frustrated with this, and trust me I'm not new to computers either. I build and repair PCs for a living.

Me too, most of the builds I do however are one off's around £2500+ each though, as I only do them when they are worth my time these days...

I mainly do Web work to get me by, and travel and also recently opened a retail store so... I get very tired these days

OK, if it helps I can make a quick video tutorial for you...

would be quicker than explaining how to use the file explorer, or would it?

I would advise you to buy the Hands on DBPro books 1 and 2 they I found to be extremely helpful...

but if it helps I am happy to continue assisting

Yes, I really want to buy those books, and the only reason I haven't yet is because I noticed they were published quite a few years back and didn't want to buy reference material that is too old. If 90% of those books still applies, then I will jump on those books, as so far I very much enjoy programming with DB Pro, it's just the thing that should be so simple is frustrating me to no end.

Yes, kind sir, a video would be great, and I'd highly recommend YouTube for such a video as I'm sure I am not the only one who would watch it! But take your time.. I am in no rush. Whatever would be your easiest way of explaining things would be awesome!

I dislike using youtube, prefer my own player which means the video is accessible all around the world no matter where you are...

will make it tonight...

and those books are irreplaceable!
