So the other day I had a great idea! Well it may not be great but I like to think it is.

Just kidding, but on a more serious note the idea I had was to create some sort of multi-user type of program that multiple volunteers could use to perform the task of creating a human computer. So to do this, each person would simulate one logic gate in the computer. What would happen, each person would have 1, 2, or possibly more boxes on their screen. Each would represent one of the logic gate's inputs. It would light up to indicate a logical 1 and it would lighten down (that's not proper) to indicate a logical 0. The user of the program, being assigned a specific logic gate eg AND, OR, NOT, etc and would either press or release say, the space bar to have the gate output a 1 or a 0 depending on the inputs. Just like in a real computer, logic gates have inputs connected to the outputs of other logic gates and vice versa. So one person's logic output would become someone else's logic input. In this way, logic circuits as complex as a computer could be built.

Of course, computers are some of the more complex logic gate circuits in existence, and would again require huge amounts of dedicated, well concentrated volunteers to pull it off. To make things more practical, a few things could be done. First of all, less complex circuits could be made. Another option is that each person have say, 5 logic gates for which they are responsible, and each logic gate would have its own field on the screen. The person would toggle the output of each one of these logic gates by clicking on it. Another idea perhaps, each person could carry out more complex operations than the basic elementary gate operations. For instance, a person could be responsible for acting as a binary adder or something of the like.

This isn't something I have any plans of developing any time soon, but when I thought of it I just thought I would love to share it with all of you! What do you all think of it? Any neat ideas about what could be added to make the idea more epic?

I just think it would be so neat to see a computer, made out of a couple hundred people, just execute instructions. It would execute stuff slowly but it would still be wicked cool! Maybe if I learn some sort of networking code one day this could become a possibility! Or if someone else wanted to do it that would be really cool too!

You could get a couple billion people and simulate a human brain!

I'm gonna do that! I'll just put up an add in the newspaper and by tomorrow I'll have a few billion ready to go!

How would you synchronize it? Some humans think faster than others where computers rely on the fact that all of the gates are the same speed.

That, and some of the humans would make mistakes.

Oh, and it would take a year or something to load the bootloader.

Just count the gates until you get them all selected. Then fire it up. I remember years ago that science called the gates Yes/No and Maybe. So that might work.

What I was thinking to address the issue would be to have each person have 3 seconds to enter the value, then once the 3 seconds is up, whatever state they have entered will be sent to the next gates and so on. That way when you receive inputs you receive them at the same time and you get 3 second to create your own.

What benefit is there to using humans?
This may interest you http://www.galaxyzoo.org/, it's basically what you are talking about but using the human brain's superior pattern recognition to classify galaxies.

Shh... you're pretty.

Well it would be pretty epic!

I wonder if this is possible in minecraft...
