I wanted to check out your game, but in the latest version, pressing tutorial gave me the error "Object number illegal at line 579" and pressing play game just made the menu flash.

Also, a quick suggestion, the white text on the unselected menu options is hard to read. Maybe a darker color would look better?

Hi Chris

sorry for a very long time no reply thought it kinda died this thread.

Well the latest is...

I have stated doing a ship construction screen

I have also started working on servers which will show peak times, reset times. I have also been working on the wood crafting and smithing in the game which is all planned and some of it is placed.

I thought you stopped working on this; good to see that is not the case. As a MMORPG, what kind of database will you use, or is that confidential.

Don't worry I will not stop working on it. A good way to stay in touch is to like my facebook page if you got facebook (https://www.facebook.com/IMTheGameRunner)

If I'm honest about the database I do not know :L
I'll do what I think is one to start off with and then next year when I start collage I'll learn some better ways. Also about the shader's I haven't even started thinking of them yet.

Shaders are one of the most overlooked aspects of games development in this forum; there is really a lot more that can be done with them that it at first appears; it's even possible to use shaders on 2D elements! Its a good investment to get comfortable with the HLSL language. Dark Shader is a good starting point; I still use it to this day as my main object shading and texturing tool; although I use Notepad++ for the actual shader programming. I've done about 3000 lines of shader code in around 10 shader files with over 30 shader techniques; all as big a role as DarkBASIC and VB.NET for my project.

Yea I seen your work and all of it have blown me away; I have been interested in getting started in using shaders but I don't want to slow down the progress I'm making with the game. I will get heavily into them when I got more of the game made.

Good point; because shader programming is addictive like a drug! I have to force myself to stop making more; a bit like stopping myself from installing a MMORPG.

Whoo, you will finish your beta in 2018, that's pretty soon; I'll finish my alpha in 2022, no joke whatsoever.

So I see you will design all of your items which includes their graphics right? Not going to try to outsource or KickStart or anything and focus on the functionality; or do you feel you need that extra control requiring you to personally take care of all the visuals for the items?

Well I'm going to try and do a Kickstarter later on when I got more to show of it and think it will be successful. Then hopefully get people who got training and experience to do the media and the AI the rest will all be me.

I'm also hoping to have it available on a board range of PC's so my models will allow the low end pc's to play it as the other media will allow the high end pc's to see the game in all it glory (in theory.)

Also good luck with Sports-fiction it looks amazing!

Another update

I have started working on camera zooming in and out also allowing you to move the camera around and allow the user to be more accurate with the construction and design of the ship.

I am also going to allow people to make copies of their design and trade them in the world at a later date allowing a new way to earn rep and make your way in the world.

Also I will upload a separate exe to allow you to try it out and give me feedback.

Hmm, friendly suggestion: The weapon/hand textures and models seem far higher quality in comparison to those of the world, the models of buildings and such seem flat and undetailed, and the textures seem a bit... meh. Especially considering the complexity of that dagger model + texture (Mmm dat dagger)

Hi GunnerWolf,

Yea I'm not that good at making models so these were brought from the game creators and I will address this issue later on by adding shaders and hopefully I could higher a graphic designer from doing a kickstarter. The only problem is that this will be in about 5 years time.

Yeah, great stuff. Always good to see frequent updates and show of enthusiasm for good work. I could not watch the whole video because of a tight schedule, but I like how the world transitions. Keep it up and this will grow much bigger. I look forward to seeing some trees and plants on the landscape and a sky box, that will make it really come alive.

How are you placing objects in the map?

Thanks for the positive feedback and sorry it so long I try to keep them quite short but I kinda got a bit carried away. At the moment I'm placing by the position command and rotation command after instancing them. Hopefully I can quite a bit of the world made tomorrow and next week. I will take photos etc and continue the 'Where's the knight?' thing on Friday's so you could see how the worlds changes. Also I hope it does as I'm planning on finishing in 2023.

What's happening at I.M The Game Runner.

Ship Construction:

This part of the game is nearly done which means it will be hopefully rigorously tested by the community which includes you so I will post a the link here as well as facebook. Expect it soon as I'm finishing off the save feature, locking level system (to stop floors from being to small) and polish.

Plan After Ship Construction:

I am thinking of moving onto the combat system for the player next and making it feel enjoyable and skillful. I have got a few ideas for this but not totally decided as which way will be best so I'm going to ask you.

Here are my ideas...

1) A system were stamina is a important part. I know this sounds similar to other games such as skyrim and Dead Island but I mean to change it by having moves take longer when you have less stamina and effects of hits are different for example if you are blocking on full stamina you can block it and push the weapon away with quite a bit of force which decreases as you get more tired; then after your past the stage of being able to block and counter you move onto just blocking it and holding the weapon away from you, this would still cause stamina drain but not as much as the starting blow for it to hit your weapon. After this stage you are just managing to block them and spending most of your time dragging the weapon along the floor and attacking with large movements from exhaustion. Finally you come to the stage where you can not hold the weapon from attack which is when all your stamina is gone and this means when they attack you next and you try to parry or block the weapons falls from your hand.

2) The Second system was to have the mouse fully control the movement of the arm allowing for more precision and skill but this may not feel right or look right. The player would use the left mouse button held down to move the blade to attack and use the right mouse button to block and depending on how the mouse is moved depends on whether the attack was a slash or a direct. This could be difficult to get use to or program but it might open up more opportunities which I wanted in the game such as being able to cut open a coin purse with skill and not even touching the person.

Please feel free to comment on which you want or leave your own suggestions. I feel both have a good potential if done correctly but I don't know which would be preferred by the players. You might like a blend of both and in that case tell me the good and bad points of each and I might be able to blend it into one.

After Combat...

After the combat the next course of action would probably be doing 1/4 of the world map so I could make media to advertise the game and show how it's coming along. This will hopefully make the community more active and make the game feel more alive as the map looks bare at the moment. This will also be quite enjoyable for as I try to make it feel like a living, breathing world which I hope will be more convincing than any other game which is a enormous task but it will make the game feel so much better. This will also mean writing a lot more lore than I have got at the moment so if you would like to chip in please feel free to do so or if you want to see what lore I have got at the moment written then don't hesitate to ask.

The next thing after that which I am thinking of moving on to is the realm management which will allow you to setup bounties on players, tax's, diplomacy with other factions, upgrades, objectives and knighting etc of players.

Thanks for reading please tell me what you think.

Well hey I'll share some of my textures with you as long as you don't mind that I'm using them in my own games as well.
Try them on your castles/walls and scale them so they look right. The normal maps were created to look best in Evolved's normal shader. Use them if you want.
(To anyone else, these may NOT be used without my permission)

Yeah no problem!
It really depends on how your model's normals are set up, but it looks like your castle walls are just one texture from what I can see so just load up the larger rock wall texture and set object texture to them (I don't know what you do or don't know how to do so forgive me if this sounds condescending), then you use the scale object texture command so it repeats itself, since that texture is oblong you'll want the length value to be about twice that of the height value.

If you need more help I could send you a textured model with the normal map applied and some dbpro code showing how to use evolved's normal shader. I actually have a LOT of medieval art assets sitting around on my hard drive from projects I got bored of.

Here's that example. I commented what most of the code does, hopefully you'll understand how to use everything. There's also a bloom shader in there.
