First has anyone used any of the betas or previews of this Windows OS?

For me, I would not hurry into using Windows 8 when developing FPSC games. Although if someone has used it I would be interested in two things. Is development possible. If not will a game created with FPSC work on a Windows 8 platform that was developed in XP or Windows 7?

I did a search on "Windows 8", "Win 8" and "win8." None produced any results. I have a feeling that this is going to be a topic of discussion soon.

I have windows 8, the developer copy, let me just say, NO, NO, BIG NO NO, TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.

1:3ds max flickers and is bothersome
2:fpsc runs ok, but has a lot of problems
3:dark basic pro runs, but there are a lot of conflicts...

I have installed all of the drivers, I have updated window 8 and done everything needed for my sound and graphic's card.

On you tube video sound loops 2 times, so there is a echo also, text jumps around as I type, this happens a lot. I would stay away from window 8 If I where you, I am still waiting for my copy of windows 7 from my pc manufacture.

Thanks so much for responding Daniel. The first thing I didn't like was the mobile look-alike interface. Although that is not a good reason not to use Win8. I didn't like Win7 at first.

I know for a fact that Windows 7 works very well for me. I still like XP the best but I guess the hardware couldn't be upgraded with XP.

Sounds like Win8 has some serious issues yet and it is supposed to be release by the end of October?

The upgrade from windows 7 is already out, and to soon if you ask me, but yes, you are right on the date.

Apart from developing on Windows 8 .. a great show stopper would be that GAMES developed with DBPro and FPSC do not run well on this OS.

Ah well, until they get all the bugs ironed out, it's just gonna be another Windows 95 or Vista (shudder)

why shouldnt fpsc (or build fpsc-games) DONT run under win8 when you have installed all neccessary components (codecs,dx9.0c, wich is the job of the game-developer to deliver)?

wouldnt make sense, especially as the downward-compatibility of windows is really good since win7, i dont think they have cancelled this feature.

give it some months to get the bugs out with hardware/driver-incompatibility and let the software-publishers check if updates are neccessary, i guess win8 will work ... not that bad for desktops/laptops beside the neverending story of a system-software eating more and more RAM.

Having tried it for the heck of it on my Windows 8 PC(Technet Release, mind you. Not the crappy consumer previews) I can say it runs reasonably. The editor ocassionally flashes me a white screen until I tap an arrowkey, but that's really about all I've encountered so far.

I recently asked about this (not about FPSC specifically) on the msdn forums.

There are quite a few "if(s) and(s) and but(s)" , but generally speaking, long as you are not targeting OS specific features when developing applications you should be okay.

As far as running existing popular applications, it will be a toss up as to if they will run from Win 7 to Win 8 and vice verse, til Win 8 is more popular.

I warned the best I can, it is not ready yet, if you are a real developer creating a game, do not get windows 8, do not, trust me, there are more problems in the end of it all then needed.

Your comment
Quote: " if you are a real developer creating a game"

Which I do not claim to be, if you are meaning a "24\7 Career Professional". In that sense though, a Career Professional developer (of anything) is always looking to break into the latest and greatest tech before it reaches the masses.
The same way Lee is always trying to stay ahead. There shouldn't be any argument there of rather he is a professional or not.

This is not what I mean, if you already have a game half done on your pc now, and are wanting it to be a professional game, do not chance it, it might just mess everything up was my only point.

There is no option to go back to windows 7, you have to completely uninstall everything loosing all of your work, unless you back everything up on a disc after windows 7 is reinstalled.
