The other threads got me thinking about a logo for my site, since I don't really have one that identifies it. Then I started looking at the family crest on the wall and based it on that.

My biggest concern about it is some of you might look at it and think Abarth. It's coincidental I swear! From the shape of the shield to the colors, it's based on my coat of arms.

What is it? What does it represent? It's very pretty but you're not Nike, so you have to make it more descriptive/self explanatory. It really is nice though.

How about getting rid of the shield and make the top half of the unicorn red and the bottom yellow? Might look cool.

Quote: "..you have to make it more descriptive/self explanatory."

Does it really have to be? I'm no expert on this but it seems to me that as long as it's unique and simple it will become recognisable.

Shh... you're pretty.

i'd remove the yellow cut-out from the unicorn as it currently looks like it's been severed at the neck.

ie, more this:

unless your family is known for slaughtering mythical creatures, that is

It absolutely will... in time. The reason the Nike check mark is so recognizable is because of millions (or more) in advertising. If you have millions or can wait, then it will do fine. It's a great mark.

- Lose the drop shadow around the logo
- Increase the gaps between the unicorn's "pieces", this will allow the concept to work when the logo is both small and big.
- Consider making the logo angled using the Distort feature in photoshop.
- Make the shading of the logo's edges dark on the bottom instead of the top. The human eye normally reads shadows on the top of an image as an "inset".

Rough mockup of my suggestions:

<edit> Woops, left part of the highlight layer in there , ohwell you get the idea.

There is a reason for the red and yellow being there, it's part of the coat of arms, I don't think it's an option to change the colours; and to be honest it looks boring all in one colour.

ACK! I saw a commercial on TV that had red and black as colors for their logo, and their logo had something to do with a horse, but now I can't find it. I do remember that it wasn't really all that similar (different stylistically & different layout), but I really wanted to post it here :\

Your logo is very similar to Ferrari. I'm not trademark lawyer so I have no idea if yours is ok or not.

Visually, I think you should get rid of all shading and distortion tricks. Follow the KISS system, keep it simple stupid.

If that offends you, maybe keep it stupid simple is more your taste

Add a horn you got ferrari seriously. I know yours in a unicorn but seriously close to the same thing. Other thing would be Ferrari's looks clean/pro yours kinda looks like origami. Not trying to be harsh but it kinda does.

You think I should draw a more detailed unicorn? I wanted to keep the shape somewhat basic.

More detailed? Lots can go wrong with that, I wouldn't recommend it.

What is the logo about again?

I think your unicorn needs ears. I can see the similarity with the Ferrari logo but it's pretty superficial. I think that it's because you are using red and yellow that it makes people think of it (although the ferrari logo is yellow, one of their trademark colours for the cars is red after all).

I would consider changing the colours but generally I think it works. Maybe you could make the unicorn look like it actually is origami too, reminds me of Bladerunner that way which is no bad thing!

And I haven't stopped working on this, but the design was on my desktop and I had been without power for a week.

If seeing a horse in a heraldic pose makes you think of Ferrari then that's not really the horse's fault.

That's not bad Obese.

As for the Ferrari similarity, there is a good point. Despite the real meaning of a swastika, thanks to the nazis nobody can ever really use that symbol without either a lot of harassment or having to explain it constantly. I don't want another company to pop into people's heads when they see my logo.

I think you should follow on Obese's idea, but make it a little more modern.
Something that would work as a stencil and a coloured in design.

A little different approach here. I was starting to sorta like it, until I added the color. Now all I can think of is rainbow bright.

I'd try playing around with gradients instead of flat colours for this version. You've got a great vector shape that you can use in other scenarios in just 1/2 colours so for a web/graphic version you can afford to do a bit more, maybe something like this:

(I like the grey mane)

or this if you need both colours:

I had a go at creating something similar to Obese's idea, and styled it in the same way as the images I found.
I think its an idea worth pursuing, as its something that works as a black/white vector as well as a fully coloured logo.

Maybe without the horn I could see an australian chicken.

@BigAdd, that is very cool.

But I think I know what my symbol is missing... Flames and Wings!

I'm picturing it without colour. Like Blobby's idea but without the yellow horn. Like have the horn white or grey (like the mane). Shape is pretty cool. It only brings up chicken-related images because of the red and yellow.
