How do they all work together?

I have almost completed a design document for my next game. But I am seriously thinking about not to use shaders at all, and the reason is that I don't fully understand them. Since there's an artistic touch in shaders, not only technical I think the images, textures and scene lightning must also be done in a specific way to make everything work, right?

Do you, the reader(s) of this post now of any good website that describes this i detail?
