Hey, guys. It's the weekend, I'm putting over time into my game, and I started wondering: "How does everybody else make their games?" I mean, what do you do as you use FPSC? For example, I look at my horrid drawings for layout plans of the level as I turn on some classic rock and metal while sipping on either some iced Diet Coke or chilled Amaretto. Just wondering, you know, to shoot the with you guys. Go!

haha! I love threads like these.

The music I listen to depends on the style of the scenes I want to make, and the gameplay in them. if I want a really awesome dark stealth scene in a futuristic underground base, I listen to The Glitch Mob and Scroll through awesome Cyberpunk blogs on tumblr.

Same way, if I want a Noire romp through 1940's New York streets, I'll Listen to the Squirrel Nut zippers and eat a hot meal while I work.

I typically also like to work in bursts. I have a huge burst where I get the whole map done, then work in tiny uninspired bursts where i do all the scripting and testing and bugfixing

Well, first, I get I ideas in the shower, or when doody calls( I know, a little immature) After I get a good foundation, I sometimes write it out, level descriptions, weapon and creature ideas, story, etc. Then, if needed, I work on custom scripts and weapons that go with my ideas. Then, doody calls again... I sometimes get better ideas for the game, starting, first level, sequels, etc.

Finally, If I ever get to it, I work and test in FPSC, until satisfactory!
And of course, I usually listen to my rock and metal collection, since it's the best!

But now, school and chores get in the way, and I didn't get forinto my plans, so I hope I don't forget it.

I usually get ideas after watching a epic movie. For some reason it just gets my imagination on

I tend to run ideas through my mind before actually working in FPSC. I've got a story written for my game, so I think about how each level is going to fit in with that story, and what will be the best way of getting the story across to the player in each level.
I've got a note pad full of scribbles, sketches and ideas that I've written during development.
As for when I'm actually working with FPSC, I prefer to work in silence, with no distractions, usually for a couple of hours at a time; unless I'm trying to solve a problem, in which case I work until I succeed in solving it...

With a computer.

No, but really, I make them with a computer. I usually don't like to drink anything or eating anything. I don't like doing that at the same time I'm working on something, as I'm afraid of the food getting in my keyboard and then I'm a typical man. Doing 2 things at once is impossible I do eat and drink while watching something though.

I do like to listen to music. I usually listen to what I feel like. Most of the time I listen to rock or metal (Korn, Tool, Velvet Revolver etc.) or then I listen to soundtracks or themes of movies or games (Hulk [2003] theme by Danny Elfman is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard! The whole score is fantastic).

I also don't do anything if there's no inspiration to do so, because then everything I make comes out horrible. But most of the time the best inspiration comes when I'm the longest distance possible away from anything that even resembles a computer. I work in short bursts too usually, because then it wont become so redundant to do the same thing for so long. I also get easily frustrated if something doesn't work perfectly the way I see the scene in my head. Also if I have to do something a million times for it to even begin to work. Yeah, I'm a bit impatient, I can also be really lazy (this is really a problem), I sometimes express my frustration in ways that don't go unnoticed even by the neighbors

1. Come home
2. Sit down
3. Start up FPSC
4. Phone rings
5. Go do service call

and that's only 90% of the time. the other 10% I'm writing code I'll never use.

I feel like you're talking about me
I've wrote massive scripts for my new game , I got the storyline done perfectly : a complicated storyline with multiple choice-dependent situations .... etc. But one thing ruined my whole project : LEVEL DESIGN . I'm a FAIL DESIGNER . and I mean FAIL . If you look at other games made here in FPSC you'll feel like my levels were made by a retard .
so the designed levels just set there in my mapbank and the scripts will be given away

Honestly, I just make my games. There are no written plans of any sort, everything works inside my head. Then I create, fill in detail, optimize and then finalise.

I dumb down a great idea so much I can actually make it happen in-game and then redesign it until it actually works. The endresult will then hopefully be a full release one day. To get my mojo going in FPSC I like to listen to a large variety of music (or standup comedy specials) and occasionally flash out the techy stuff on paper so it all works later.

I keep myself motivated with sweet hot coffee. My salvation for my daily damnation

Occasionally I just let my cat walk over my keyboard...the endresult being most levels in Euthanasia.

got a gameplay idea, get a story, test theory in fpsc, when it works i build a basic map for all the levels putting in the basic stuff, build raw level-architecture (floors only) and start filling it with gameplay-relevant objects and triggers and build up to end-result. when i am done, everything is totally different to what i sketched out at the beginning, but if its fun to play i go on with new ideas... until again everything is different to what i got in mind....^^

I do that ALOT, if I'm not playing music. I'll usually put on a Whose Line is it Anyway playlist on YouTube, or hit up Spike and Barley Play. I know, technically not stand up, but I work better when I'm laughing.

I start off very detailed but then I dumb it down and take away things I could never acheive

I'm always inspired by other games. Especially the older ones, they're the funnest.

I've got a notebook of ideas. I'll sketch a few things too. TV games music anything for inspiration. I usually have a movie or something on in the background while I work.

Well I usually do FPSC in the weekends (mostly).

I draw levels on a whiteboard, design the rooms and all that, then make the level. When all my levels are done, I start on the "checking" stuff, adding different tasks, objectives menu, HUDs and so on. And at the end I test if there is any bugs, I fix the ones I can fix and I ask on the forums for those I can't fix. (and then wait a long time for an answer :p ) And then I release it, and wait for approval. (indievania.)

Under the level making I usually drink a mug of coke, eat something (If I have something o.O), listen to some random dubstep, old songs or some new stuff. I usually take breaks too, checking facebook/twitter, and watching some random YT videos.
