Hello I think this is the right place to post! Sorry if it isn't.
I'm a student and have been tasked with creating a program for an end user, my end user will be any one who want to play my game. However I need to conduct interviews and I would really love it if I could get people answering my questions from all around the world, not just my class room! Here are my questions:

1)How many top down games have you played?
2)How many side scroller games have you played?
3)What do you like best about top down games?
4)What do you like best about side scroller games?
5)What are the worst features of top down games?
6)What are the worst features of side scroller games?
7)Ultimately which do you think is better? Side scroller or top down
8)Is story better than graphics?
9)Does graphics really matter?
10)What tugs on you emotionally when playing a game? e.g. Death, happiness, action, calmness.
11) what theme do you like in a game? dark, light, horror, action etc.
12) would you like the ability to share your scores online and post them to facebook or other social networking sites?

My game will be a 2D top down or side scroller game, but I don't want to create a normal shooter game. I want something that's going to create an emotional response in the player.
And if this game turns out any good I will post it on here.

Thanks in advance for answering.

1)How many top down games have you played?
50+?

2)How many side scroller games have you played?
50+?

3)What do you like best about top down games?
Overviews, as well as the unseen/unexpected...

4)What do you like best about side scroller games?
Deceptively easy...

5)What are the worst features of top down games?
2D most of the time, 3D adds to Depth...

6)What are the worst features of side scroller games?
Erm, innability to see whats coming next I guess...

7)Ultimately which do you think is better? Side scroller or top down
I think 3D side scrollers give more of a dimensionsional feeling so possibly more immersive... but a top down 3D view could still carry the same feeling...

8)Is story better than graphics?
You could have the worst visual styling, but nothing beats gameplay with good storylines...[The same goes in reverse, you could have the best visual style, but a terrible gameplay mechanic or storyline will render the game unplayable...]

9)Does graphics really matter?
See answer above...

10)What tugs on you emotionally when playing a game? e.g. Death, happiness, action, calmness.
Funky Characters with quirky moments... dating, romance, battles, a lot really... but a cocktail of the lot in a short period of time is risking it... there should be a balanced amount through the gameplay...

11) what theme do you like in a game? dark, light, horror, action etc.
A combination...

12) would you like the ability to share your scores online and post them to facebook or other social networking sites?
Whats this going to brig for my gameplay aside from irritating me and my friends... farmwille [and other pointless games] does enough damage to the gaming industry and its image...

You really should separate the top down with the side scrollers... questions... will make things confusing for you and for the end people filling this in... try this...

A = TOP DOWN
B = SIDE SCROLLERS

1A
2A
3A
4A
5A
ETC...

1B
2B
3B
4B
5B
ETC...

And for the in-between questions use a C section...

Hope this helps...

EDIT

Woops, missed out 6...

1) 50+

2) 70+ (big fan of the old arcade-classics, well ... i was, havent played anything like it for years)

3-7 is useless to ask because there are so many good and bad games out there over my gaming-years (1984+).

8)of course...as long as you dont forget gameplay.

9)nop... but sound does.

10)depends on story and what is the effort the author is able to create, may it sadness (heavy rain), horror (amnesia) or ROFL (stupid invaders)

11) today: darker, yesterday: fun, tomorrow: who knows? but i tend to play games with some sort of depth, wich is better to find in darker places.

12) nop, just bumbledom for ... no, i will get in trouble writing my words about "facebookers" and people in need to step into the spotlight.^^

Quote: "1)How many top down games have you played?"

Numerous...I'd say 50 to 70 +
Quote: "
2)How many side scroller games have you played?"

20+
Quote: "
3)What do you like best about top down games?"

A lot of them had a great storyline and I paritculary like click-to-death combatsystems ala Nox/Diablo in this kind of game.
Quote: "
4)What do you like best about side scroller games?"

Action/arcade fun
Quote: "
5)What are the worst features of top down games?"

Mapfog that disolves as you explore and the limited visuals. Topdown is a thing of the past
Quote: "
6)What are the worst features of side scroller games?"

Well, as sidescrollers are simple games in themselves, the POV doesn't really do any damage. Sidescrollers are just simple jump'n'run or shoot'em'up games.

7)Ultimately which do you think is better? Side scroller or top down"

Its 2012 made...real time 3d or gtfo...unless you work on some phone app
Quote: "
8)Is story better than graphics?"

Story and athmosphere yes...but graphics can convey a lot to this. Style and feel of a game is a combination of both.
Quote: "
9)Does graphics really matter?"

Yes.
Quote: "
10)What tugs on you emotionally when playing a game? e.g. Death, happiness, action, calmness."

Storyline, Setting and how the game portrays this. Gameplay when it comes to the fun value.
Quote: "
11) what theme do you like in a game? dark, light, horror, action etc."

Depends on the game...I'm open minded here.

not even remotly interested.

1)How many top down games have you played?
To many to count...

2)How many side scroller games have you played?
Not as many, I missed the NES age of video games. I was playing MechWarrior and Wing Commander at the time

3)What do you like best about top down games?
I like multi character problem solving best in my top down games. See Sims and Starcraft.

4)What do you like best about side scroller games?
Immediately being able to play the game and understand how it works

5)What are the worst features of top down games?
When a game makes me micromanage the elements of the game.

6)What are the worst features of side scroller games?
I doubt you can give me a game play experience I have not yet had...

7)Ultimately which do you think is better? Side scroller or top down
I decline to answer. However there are more than enough FPS and TPS games, don't make one of those.

8)Is story better than graphics?
Story doesn't matter. Graphics only needs to be good enough to convey they meaning of the user interface.

9)Does graphics really matter?
Yes, the graphics have to be good enough that I get the message of what is going on, and why it matters.

10)What tugs on you emotionally when playing a game? e.g. Death, happiness, action, calmness.
Games don't make me emotional.

11) what theme do you like in a game? dark, light, horror, action etc.

I like problem solving games. On my phone I am an outright Sudoku addict.

On computer, I like setting the initial state then watching the game unfold, where I then have to tweak things. I like as much of it as possible to be automatic. Make the problems I have to solve more complex than Tower defense though.

12) would you like the ability to share your scores online and post them to facebook or other social networking sites?
Not even vaguely. Although, if it is a score based game, I would like my statistics to be tracked over time.

I like the tactical planning that comes with seeing around corners and constantly having a birds eye map view
