I just purchased an editor for Blitz Basic called Protean. It's absolutely awsome! I was thinking that if there was enough interest from the DBPro community the Author of Protean might be inclined to generalize the editor to work with other compilers such as DBPro, then the DBPro community could use this editor as an option if they wanted to.

I've been going through the documentation for Protean for a couple of days now. It's huge! Rob H the author is a genius.

If anyone is interested in the Protean web address I'll be happy to supply it.

Rob Hutchinson's (I think thats his surname) IDE is very impressive indeed - full project management & stats, full source info, debug utils and just about every other imaginable feature under the sun. I reckon it would make a lot of sense to port it to DBPro.

Hm, there are a lot of IDe´s in the making (I try too), and at least some of them are freeware and should turn out well, so I for myself will not pay for an IDE....

A very early demois now available - comments very wellcome

I've got good news. Protean will eventually support other compilers. Rob says he wants to add even more features before he supports more compilers.


Unfortunately, he's not going to make the compiler free. But he's putting in so much work into this editor that it's just not right for him to get nothing in return.

Well, it won't be too long.

I disagree - Protean is far more fully featured than a new official IDE is ever likely to be.

Protean..? but the if that's the BlitzBasic editor then you guys must be using a completely different Protean Editor... because the Blitz editors i've used are deadly underfeatured.

Personally i'm looking forward to the new IDE, i'll have to checkout Protean but that said; features are useless if it isn't simple to use
