Im sure if its not relevant the mods will remove this thread.

Im sure posting in the DBPro forums regarding normal mapping and in the 2D forums regarding noise reduction are both relevant but linked to the same issue, just a different scope on it.

Do you have a typical noisy image we can experiment on? I've got a few ideas I'd like to test.

I'm sure it's possible in DBPro - you just need to get the right algorithm/method.

Hi Green Gandalf,

To cut a long story short, im trying ot make an app that will generate a normal map from any given image.

So far i can load and image, process it as a normal map and then slightly blur the image to get rid of som of the roughness.

I think what needs to happen is load the image, remove noise, then generate the normal map.

When i compare my generated normal maps to that of Cray bump for example, there is a big difference in the amount of finer detail.

So i guess my question really applys to any image.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you mean that there is too much detail in your normal maps - or too little?

Thanks - I thought I'd better confirm that.

Have you looked at the normal mapping thread by david w ?

Normal and Heightmaps

I posted some normal map creating code there but it probably needs further tweaking for your smoothness issue which, if I recall correctly, my code also suffers from to some extent. I never bothered to remedy that issue because I now use the normal map export function in Texture Maker which works well.

If you really need it I could have a fresh look at the code (and perhaps include some GUI stuff as well ).
