I have heard of this here in the forums but am not sure what it is all about. How high is the memory cap? What eats up the most memory?
Is there a way around it?

Thanks

The memory cap is actually inherent to all 32 bit windows programs. By default windows 32 bit reserves about gigs of ram for itself. So if you have four gigs of ram (max on a 32 bit machine) you can build a game that does not exceed 1.85 gig of ram to compile. Now, FPSC is a 32 bit program, so even if you have 24 gigs of ram on a 64 bit machine it will cap at 1.85. There is a patch floating around here that will remove the cap, but possibly add some bugs and also a 32 bit only "switch" (google search) that will force windows to run in 1 gig of ram but it also causes severe instability.

As far as what eats it up most, I would say light volume, then large logic and models, texture size and reduction would be places to start cutting back.

I see! I made a small map mot to long ago all I had was 1 bldg that covered 2 squares a door 2 windows a desk entity in it a couple of chairs 1 character in it a path leading out the door for 2 squares. Around the outside of the bldg. 2 squares of grass all the way around it and 2 lamp posts at the end of the path outside. Nothing extra, no lighting nothing and that was over 500MB!

There's a certain amount of virtual memory that will be used no matter the size of the map. So don't worry about it until you actually run over the cap. As ray said, it is the light mapping that will cause a large amount of VM to be used.
