Hi,

So I've been messing around with DBP for a while and here's my first marketable product:

http://www.glasstowers.co.uk/witches-cauldron/

There's a vid, if you don't fancy downloading the 'free edition'

A simple game to encourage kiddies to learn their tables. I work in a school, and our kids love the prog. Had other schools testing it as well. I'm sure it's not perfect, but hey-ho. The network version mentioned on the website uses Dark Net to allow players to compete 'A vs. B'-style. Made use of EZ-rotate for when the cottage starts to spin, and to keep the cauldron pointing where it should.

Thought you might be interested to see what folk are doing with this DBP thing... the other products on my site were written in C++. Must say, DBP was a slap in the face, as I'm used to encapsulating everything in classes, etc. but managed to (kind of) mimic this style of coding in my DPB code.

Comments welcomed - especially nice ones

Thanks,

James

p.s. Cheers to Kevin MacLeod for the music! Sent a 'not unhefty' donation his way and included him in the credits.

Replying to myself (first sign of madness, I know!) but here's a link to the vid of the network game:

Aargh! Malicious attack? Unsafe links? What trickery is this? I will investigate and let you know... it's only a WordPress website!

Deary, deary me. :-(

Thanks for the heads-up tho.

Just submitted my site to MS 'Malware Protection Center' - how do they get their information in the first place? Bloody hell!

Very glad you guys replied... I need to get this sorted out.

Green Gandalf - which product produced an 'Unsafe Links' alert?

Thanks again,

James

Both links in your first two posts give the following warning which might be from Kaspersky rather than Windows. No idea whether it's a false positive or not. I get it as soon as I click on your links - either of them.

I'll see what I get on my other machine which uses Norton and report back.

Edit I get no warning at all on the other machine which could be an important clue. The machine with W7 gives the warning, the one with Vista doesn't. Could this be simply the Windows 7 security issue? If it is - and if you're using DBP - then make sure you use the latest upgrade to compile the exe. Check the U77 upgrade thread for details. Which version were you using?

I'm downloading the file now on to my Vista machine and will report back when I get a chance to test it - probably not tonight though.

Edit2 OK. Downloaded WitchesCauldron without any annoying warnings on to my Vista machine, installed and briefly tested it on that machine then copied the download file across to my W7 machine and installed and tested it again. Worked fine - and beautifully by the way - on both machines, so the problem certainly doesn't seem to be that file or the Windows 7 security issue.

Very nice graphics and sound. I only played it for a few seconds because it's late - way past the "witching hour" here in fact - but I can see we'll be giving it a good test run tomorrow.

Running Win7 here with Chrome. No warnings. But I also don't use MS Security suite.

Interesting game, nice theme. Seems well put together. I've been looking into doing some children games myself lately and started work on a spelling game.

This is what is thrown by Windows Defender in Windows 8 [AKA Security Essentials]

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?name=Exploit%3aWin32%2fPdfjsc.AEA&threatid=2147666491

Can I ask why you are using Java to inject a PDF document onto our systems?

Hello people.

I'm back from the pub. Week off work.

Well many thanks again for your comments and testing, here's a few responses about what you've written.

Green Gandalf: U77 is installed over here, and I'm sure that's what I built the exe with, although I'm shortly going to recompile it, rebuild the installer, and replace the version on the website. I wonder if that is the problem, cos a while ago AVG was giving me false positives on exes which DB created. Seems to be fine since the U77 upgrade. Thanks for the comments about the graphics and sound, also. I am NOT a graphics guy and everything graphical takes me ages and multiple glasses of gin to satisfy my OCD Thanks for testing it - wonder if you'll break it!

Phaelax: good luck with the spelling game!! I'd be interested to see how that turns out. Cheers for your positive comments.

MrValentine: As far as I know, I'm not trying to inject a PDF document into your system in any dodgy way. Although the installer does contain the manual as a PDF. Wonder if that's what you're seeing.

LeeBamber: I am chuffed to bits that you like this.

mr Handy: Thanks for the Kaspersky report.

What a great community of helpful people we have here... your help and input is much appreciated.

Yeah I know that feeling

Cheers, MrValentine, for trying the website tho, and your report from Windows Defender. I've submitted the site to MS for consideration (heard nowt back yet), still confused as to why it would show up as a threat in the first place! I am not a threatening bloke! Bald, broken and weather-beaten, maybe.

Fallout - thanks for your kind comment.

No worries, not biting at you, just raising awareness or else you may never know why others may simply not bother... I do think it may be a rogue script running on your site... perhaps disable some un-important plugins?

Jambo B

I was just about to report some other problems with the site so I've just tested the links again and everything seems fine now.

However, that could be a side effect of something I've done at this end so when she's not looking I'll test it again from Mrs Gandalf's W7 laptop and see if it's OK there as well.

And games like that make all our efforts worthwhile. Please keep them coming.

Edit Seems Ok from our other machine too. Perhaps the problem has been resolved.

Now to give the game just one more try ...

Tried the site from my mate's laptop (with Kaspersky) and nothing was reported. Very strange issue

Green Gandalf - did you manage to win, or did the witch have her way??

Cheers again!

As usual she had her way ...

I did manage to get on to the hi-score list though - just.

The main problem I had was actually being able to see the wand pointer once I was moving it - but then my keyboard/mouse/screen coordination skills are quite poor. .

That's one reason I tend to stick to turn based games - but yours was fun to play nevertheless. The graphics and sound make the game (thought I'd better add that since no-one else has mentioned it ).

Actually someone else has mentioned the wand/pointer. It's a cursor, and I wondered at the time if I ought to use a sprite or a locked object which moves in front of the camera. What do you think? I might give it a go - it can be rather difficult to see.

You can also type the answers using the keyboard, maybe you could take the witch down that way!

I've always been ok with editing/mixing sounds, but when it comes to graphics I have to buy ones which are somewhere near what I want, then spend ages swearing and sweating over Paint Shop Pro to get them looking something like reasonable. In fact I reckon I spend more time over gfx than I do with the code.

Actually I bet lots of people in this forum have that problem... gfx are hard!

Cheers,

Did you adjust it's "hot spot" or whatever it's called? If it's clicking somewhere slightly off where you might expect that could explain part of the coordination problem - wouldn't affect visibility as such though.

I know what you mean. It can take quite a bit of time just to get a 64x64 tile image looking right.

Its hot spot was in the normal place, I think, I didn't mess around with that... hoped people would use the white point on the wand to click. It's not perfect tho by any means, and as you say it can be difficult to see in the thick of the action

I'm going to take a look at getting a locked object to float right in front of the camera, I think. I'd rather not start messing around with sprites (although I'm using one to do the fades).

In my new game (Project Wade ) I'm doing a similar thing with a crosshair, although that was a bit of a nightmare to set up, as screen co-ordinates do not tally with 3d co-ordinates without some messing about. I predict that more gin will be needed.

Cheers,

If I tried that I'd end up with a ghastly as well as ghostly mess.
