The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month (1918). That is when the Armistice was signed, ending the 4+ year long war, that was coined "The Great War"....the War to End All Wars. Later, unfortunately, it was simply called "World War 1".

Unlike Memorial Day (which honors the fallen), Veterans Day is about honoring those servicemen and servicewomen who are still alive; whether they still serve, or are no longer in the Armed Forces. As a fellow Veteran; I'd like to thank all those that are currently serving, as well as those that have gone before me.

Thank you.

-Sgt. Keith Caldwell - U.S. Army (1995-2010)

Here in Australia (and in the UK) today is Remembrance Day. There is a 2 min silence at 11am to remember fallen soldiers. Sadly, it seems to me that every year less and less people take the time out of their day to remember.

Well happy Veterans day and a thank you to past and currently serving members of the armed forces here in the UK and abroad. I know there's a number of folk here who have had military service, so I guess a salute is necessary for the TGC military folk.

And yes, for us it's Remembrance Day, hence there's been poppies sold leading up to this. It's to honour the fallen and the poppy appeal goes towards servicemen and women.

For us in Canada it's Remembrance Day too. I didn't know Veterans day falls on the same day

I salute, those that have gone before, those that are with us today and those that continue to do the job they are asked but may not be willing to do.

I'm just curious, but why did you get out at 15 rather than sticking to 20?

And thanks, Happy Veteran's Day to you as well.

Happy? Does every thing have to be turned into some kind of holiday? Its a day to remember the fallen, nothing happy about it.

I've attached a PDF that my commander sent to everyone listing places giving out free meals today.

For Veteran's Day (the American holiday) it's to celebrate Veterans and wishing them happiness and good health and to also honour them. We've got some Vets on the forum and I think that's the point here - I'd like them to have a happy Veteran's day (and happy days for the rest of the year).

Remembrance Day on the other hand, it'd be out of spirit to wish a 'happy' remembrance day because you're honouring the fallen and death is not really something you celebrate. However, nobody's saying happy remembrance day.

Ok then. Being British and only knowing remembrance day, I thought it odd adding happy, thought it was the same thing, but seems it isn't.

Let's not let the meaning of the thread take an opposite direction than what is intended. As Canadian military, I knew exactly what Keith meant and it was in no way disrespectful.

We thank those that have served, both at home and abroad. We thank those that made the ultimate sacrifice to give us the freedom and liberties we have today.

To remember is to be grateful; to be grateful is to give thanks.

Politics, basically. I may go finish off the last few years with my local Guard Unit though; haven't decided yet.

Applebees did an awesome job for all Vets in my area today. Kudos to them!

To thank those fallen is only correct and proper and a debt we cant repay, to thank those serving/served is to make them feel what they do is worthwhile and appreciated.

Thank you and happy (belated) Veterans Day.

Every place I went to must be a franchise or something, because nobody would honor the supposed discounts. All I wanted was a sandwich!

I think you should. You put in a lot of time and shouldn't let the politics prevent you from having what you earned.

Xplosys, you're way older than I ever thought you were. :p If I may ask, you volunteered, right? The draft ended just before '74 didn't it?

Yes, that's correct. I enlisted and as with Keith, politics played a large part in my early retirement, the discussing of which would not stand up to the AUP.

Whilst politics have been ever present in my career, I will not allow it to stop me from serving 20-30 years, unless I die of unnatural causes.

Whatever comes first.
