the command works great but.. i'm kinda turned off by the name. for one, it's misleading. it's not any kind of mapping in the first place. mapping implies a texture; but alpha has nothing to do with the texture. secondly you can turn the alpha off with this command as well, which throws into question the word "on".

not to mention it's a long command for something so simple.

one thing i'd like to know.. who came up with the name for this command? i'd like to slap him with a carp and rename it "SET ALPHA".

stop looking at me!

no no, that should be "Set Object alpha", not just "Set alpha" cos that sounds like you are setting the "world" alpha setting.

Keyboard not detected. Press F1 to continue.

Oddly enough it used to have a problem where it didn't work with untextured objects. Maybe it doesn't just set the diffuse component of a vertex.

I reckon it just applies an offset to the alpha layer of a texture, however - I've found that you don't really need alpha most of the time - you can blend a transparent texture into the world using SET OBJECT TRANSPARENCY Obj,2 - I urge everyone to try it and prepare to be amazed at the difference in quality.

setting an object's alpha is useful for fading things out (like particles), GUIs etc.

"not just "Set alpha" cos that sounds like you are setting the "world" alpha setting"

there's no such thing as a world alpha setting you can't even get it confused with anything.

"Maybe it doesn't just set the diffuse component of a vertex"

i always thought it set the alpha component in the diffuse color. that's how i do it anyway. i don't know why they'd do something as complicated as setting the alpha of each vertex or applying an offset in the alpha channel of the texture
