Hi everybody, im planning to start a project when I get DBPro which would be a fully 3d game, yet it would require lots of navigation in-game via menus with buttons, scroll bars and the like - I wondered how to achieve this.

Would it be done using planes or sprites or what?

Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

using sprites would be the easiest and most efficient way I think

You may want to check out the performance of 3d planes instead of sprites, they have about the same features as sprites but keep the whole scene in 3D.

I built a menu system for VirMin that uses sprites and I took a hefty FPS hit for it. As time permits, I'm going to redo the menu in 3D and see how that works out.

If you're using patch 5, the pick object command can make picking 3D menu objects a snap.

Sprites are 3D planes - just remember to switch the backsave off for them and they are just as fast

Plus, with sprites, you can fade them in and out.

Sorted. I thought sprites wouldve been the one to use due to the fact that in Pro theyre essentially 3d anyways. Thanks to everybody for the help, much appreciated

you can put sort of "click events" on them right? so when they click a menu pic it does w/e it should.

Click events sound dead wrong unless I missed a major section of the API. Depending on the type of menu you can do object picking or screen coordinate checking.

If you download my editor, there is a plugin by newbi2basic, which creates menus for you. So you can carry on perfecting your game until you have finished that, and then perfect the menu code.

Sprites work ok with 3D images swirling around behind them?

Sprites in Pro are based on 3d rather than 2d (as far as I know), whrerby they are actually planes anyway, but dealt with as sprites, differently. But im unsure.

A sprite is essentially a 3D Plain 'Glued' to the screen and ignoring all environmental effects. Compair the command sets of Sprites and 3D Planes to decide which one you need.

@ICERGB Sprites are drawn in front of the screen, so it would be difficult to have an object pass in front of the sprite unless you rendered it as a sprite itself.

Isn't there a command to specify whether sprites are drawn in front or in back of the 3D stuff? I thought I saw that somewhere at one point...

Yes, there is. It would be harder to have just ONE object drawn in front of a sprite tho

yep theres commands for specifying what order sprites are drawn - in front of or behind 3d objects. Which should make them perfect for in game menus, as long as I switch the backsave off.
