Interesting day! Was out riding with mates and we were taking a pretty sedate trundle to a local cafe for a brew. I was leading and noticed one of us was missing at the back of the group so pulled over to wait. Then a guy pulls over in a car and tells us he just passed a bike accident. So we spin it round and charge back the way we came, past loads of stationary traffic and people flashing their lights and there we find Tom sitting at the side of the road with his bike in the bushes.

Basically he hit a deer at about 50-60mph, pretty much cutting it in half. He destroyed the right side of the bike and most of the front, but appears to have got away with a cracked rib and bruises. That's getting off very lightly! Rudolf was not so lucky, and apparently Santa is not so chuffed with him.

Oh deer. Well I'm glad your friend is all right and that he managed to get off lucky and I bet it was a hell of a shock. Unfortunately, if a deer comes running out there's not a lot you can do except hope you walk away with bruises and the deer dies quickly and painlessly (or not at all, but lets be realistic).

On an unrelated note, I was eating venison burgers on Thursday night. I would recommend them.

your buddy was lucky, indeed. but, looks like santa will have to recruit a new point man.

gift: to tom for xmas. i can't vouch for their effectiveness (and they have $ome that range into the hundreds) but it couldn't hurt if you're in deep-populated areas.

i crossed paths with a young buck a couple years ago in my (smaller) pickup: ~midnite in the middle lane of a 5-lane highway, i caught something in my peripheral leaping across (~3' in the air) from the right which triggered an adrenaline-based time-slowage where i recounted and recited (more than once) a decades-old vow to "take out" whatever was in front of me and not swerve out of my lane and cause a pile-up when it comes to any kinda critter vs what could be worse results (this was my first real opportunity to test that). i'd got on the brakes as much as i should, i suppose, and was content with my contending with the "situation", in hindsight.

the deer (i surmised) slipped and fell close to the asphalt once it landed square in front of me, though i did strike it enough to cause ~$400 in damage (bumper was damaged enough to require replacement and the valence + lighting wasn't cheap); based on the bristle count discovered beneath, i supposed there's a chance the deer survived atleast long enough to curse all of mankind...

I've seen those whistle things and seen lots of mixed reviews for them. I'm not convinced by them if I'm honest. Will they necessarily hear them over the sound of an engine, and if they do, what to say they won't freeze or run into the road? Definitely one for debate!

@Sep, yeah there is literally nothing you can do apart from ride/drive at 3mph everywhere. You can't see them coming until they bolt out of the hedgerow and right into the road. Definitely luck of the draw. We all rode down that road, but it was Tom who got taken out. Could've been any of us and could've been much worse.

Unlucky, but that's the risk you take when you drive on those country roads. God damn wildlife.

What's the speed limit on those kind of roads anyway? It'd be about 90km/h here. Speaking of dangerous situations, I found out on thursday that I passed my driving test. Yay.

Speed limit is 60mph on country roads IIRC, so 96kmh.

Hitting a deer on a bike? Yea he got real lucky! I had one hit me before, stupid animals.

Maybe they should move the deer signs

fallout, i'd still gift the $6 deer whistle regardless of its effectiveness. making a buddy laugh while they have cracked ribs is one of life's pleasures

Considering he's been on the forums longer than me, I just assume he's gotta at least be in his mid-20s.

That deer call-in is ridiculous! I shared it to all those concerned for giggles. I don't think we have deer crossing signs in the UK though, or if we do, they're quite sparse down my neck of the woods. I've seen horse/pony related ones in the new forest though.

@Virtual Nomads - Could be good for a laugh! Or maybe I'll get him a sticker. There's gotta be a suitably amusing one somewhere.

I turn 24 on Tuesday. I hadn't started driving before because a) it's expensive here (I think it cost a couple of thousand euros in the end), and b) the theory test is already difficult enough, without my lacking French skills letting me down. But I passed both the theory and practical test first time, so I'm obviously awesome.

I'm more awesome than you though Benjamin. I'm so awesome that deer wait in the hedgerows for me to go past, then leap out and throw themselves into the path of my pursuers.

Sounds like driving in Europe sucks. I think it cost me about $100 the first time, for temp license/test/real license. Then just $50 to renew every year. It varies state to state, but Ohio ain't too bad. My sister however, lives in SC and renewal fees are based on the car you drive. It's like $200 a year for her toyota, but only $50 for jag in ohio :p

It varies from country to country. It's a lot cheaper and somewhat easier in the UK, and I think you can drive almost straight away when learning, using a provisional licence.

I don't think such a license exists in France, so you can only drive before getting the licence if a) you're with a driving instructor, or b) you use the conduite accompagnée system where you have to have a licenced driver in the car with you. Lessons are about €34 an hour, and by law you have to do at least 20 hours. So that's probably the most expensive part. The actual cost of the licence I think is something like €25, and you don't need to renew it every year (except in 2033 when France makes the switch to the EU licence). Insurance on the other hand...

We have driving lessons here, but they're not mandatory if you're 18.

Not really anything to get, basically just telling the tree to bleep give you money, and then calling the tree a bleep, personally I don't actually see why it is so funny.

I thought it was something to do with the saying "money doesn't grow on trees". And no, it wasn't funny.

Well MrValentine obviously understood it to mean something, so I'd be interested to hear his take on it.

I thought that too, or perhaps something to do with being a cat.
