So I recently purchased a new machine, complete with Windows 8. I used some included software to transfer everything from my old machine to my new one, and one of the things that transferred was FPSC. Which was awesome, as I didn't think I'd have to re-install the thing.

So I get it transferred, turn UAC off, launch FPSC...and it crashes. I get multiple errors, including the "You must turn off UAC to run FPSC" and "You are out of memory".

I have Windows 8, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB video display, 1 TB HDD. Anybody know why I am unable to run FPSC on a brand new machine?

Click File Explorer > Right Click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Should be on the Advanced Tab... if not Click the Advanced Tab > Inside Performance Click Settings > Click the Data Execution Prevention Tab > Click Turn on for all programs except for those you select below... > [you might need to restart first so click apply and then go back to this page...] > Click Add and navigate to the Program EXE, add all associated FPSC EXEs...

Click apply and restart if requested, probably a good idea to do so anyway...

I have not installed FPSC myself to test this, but it works for Plant Life, TreeMagik and a few other programs too...

Hope this resolves... remember to try compatibility mode too... and Admin mode...

Ask me anytime about how to remove some apps from the list too hehe... [Just disable the DEP and then restart and then remove, usually does it]

Ok, so I tried all the suggestions given, and they did NOT work. But I did find a solution.

I ran the troubleshooter for compatibility, and one of the questions it asked me was the previous OS it ran under, and if it needed admin privileges. Seeing this, I cancelled the troubleshooter and did the following:

1. Clicked on File Explorer.
2. Navigated to the location where the FPSC executable was.
3. Right clicked on the FPSC executable, and then clicked on Properties.
4. Click on the Compatibility tab, and then clicked on Change these settings for all users. (Note - I'm the only user on this machine)
5. Checked the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for, and then selected the previous OS in the dropdown (for me, this was Windows Vista SP 2).
6. Under Privilege Level, I checked the box for Run this program as an administrator.

I restarted my machine and launched FPSC. Voila! It works! I tested all functionality, and nothing is broken anymore.

Just thought I'd put the instructions out here in case someone else runs into this problem.

You don't need to touch DEP to get FPSC to run in Windows 7 or 8. You also don't need to turn off UAC to run FPSC either. You may have to run FPSC as Administrator on some systems, depending on OS or setup. In Vista we have to run as Administrator; in Win 7 or 8 we do not; in VMWare (regardless of OS) we run as Administrator.

The only reason that they (whoever suggested it in the first place) recommend turning off UAC is because when other programs are launched and require permission, the focus from FPSC is lost and the app crashes. We run with UAC on and never have an issue. We know from experience to launch any apps that require permission first before launching FPSC.

UAC and DEP exists for a reason. If people are not familiar with software, operating systems, etc I would not advise them to play with their settings. Particularly if they are using a family computer.

That is true... Umm DEP was spawned for DBP compiling but looked more to be with protection software...

I pointed my post out because I had mentioned Admin mode but it went un-noticed which is a shame...

I've never had to touch DEP for anything save one piece of software, and it was not any TGC product.

We have PlantLife and TreeMagik- work just fine without touching DEP. So does DBP, DBC, FPSC, etc. As I said, I've never had to touch DEP for any TGC product.

Thats interesting... Can you share how you got PL and TM to work without using DEP?

EDIT

Would be quite helpful...

There is nothing to share. We bought DarkGame Studio bundle which has Tree Magik and Plant Life. We installed them and they work fine with no errors. My wife uses them quite a bit to create plants and trees. As I said, we have used these and FPSC in both Vista, Win 7, XP, Win 8, and in VMWare. Never had to touch DEP at all. They ran straight out of the box.

Thats strange...

But ok shall try myself... May be a driver issue or whatnot...

EDIT

But DEP does get it working for me... Hence my mentioning of it...

I understand that some like yourself have either used DEP or turned off UAC to get it working. I was merely pointing out that UAC and DEP have their purpose, and unless people know what they do and understand the OS/software, they could cause further issues with their machines. Particularly inexperienced computer users- they turn off UAC for one app and the next thing is an unwanted app suddenly runs without any warning presented. That was the purpose of UAC in the first place- to prevent unwanted software from running and making changes to the system.

Issues with software may be solved by by disabling DEP, but at the risk of increasing exposure of the system to malware. DEP can be turned off on a per-application basis, or turned off entirely for all non-essential Windows programs and services, but never global. It should never be touched unless it is a last resort, and all other suggestions are tried first (run as Admin, UAC).

Yet I have not mentioned UAC here... But yeah I would only suggest using DEP on trusted apps and only as a last resort... Same goes for UAC...

I did not say you did. It was mentioned in the OP.

To run FPSC in windows 8 you have to right click it Properties/Compatibility then click Run as administrator and make sure UAC is switched off.

Just right clicking and click Run as administrator does not work in windows 8

A lot of programs have to be run as admin in windows 8 due to the way the system does need permission to do anything to change files.

Some system seem you don't need to switch off UAC but turn it down thanks to blackfox for the info

MrValentine, I do need to learn how to read. I pretty much stopped after the DEP stuff, and that's on me.
