Does anyone have the map data of the old classic TGC server lying around?

A wave of nostalgia overcame me this morning and I was flicking through the old threads where MineCraft Classic was a hot topic. It would be really awesome to roam the streets of that map once more.

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&b=2&t=176179&p=0

I know the odds are against me of someone still having the data, but it's worth a shot.

Wasn't it Jericho who maintained it? I'd imagine if he didn't have an old copy, then nobody would, heh. Those were some good times, though I put more time into the first survival map.

Multiplayer Minecraft was more appealing to me when it didn't involve the usual mods and was more just the singleplayer game with more people. It takes a good thirty minutes of first joining a server just to learn the rules (if you're lucky), and even then, the mods in minecraft don't always have the best UI, so it's sometimes confusing just trying to bring up a menu for one of the fancy mods.

Ah well, vanilla is just funner for me I suppose. Perhaps that's why I got so enveloped in the original TGC servers when it was more just straight building and interacting rather than trying to figure out how to play the game that you've been playing for forever.

Oh yes I do have the maps from my servers. However... before I unleash it unto the world, should we instead just start it back up again?

I have both the alpha and classic. I don't know what kind of state the backups I have are in. The server was being overrun by trolls by the time I shut it down if I recall.

Here's the last image taken of the classic server It's dated November 9th, 2010 at midnight.

Would it make much sense to start up a vanilla server and import the classic maps into the newest version of MineCraft? Or should we stick to the classic/alpha release?

I like the idea of starting this up again. If you want to host it that would be awesome, otherwise I have an idle 24/7 server running here.

Could you provide a download for the maps anyway?

Here's the map files for the alpha map. Not sure what's out there. As for classic, I'd really like to startup a classic server using openclassic. Anybody got any tips on getting that to work? I just need it to run the map files from vanilla classic on 32bit Ubuntu.

I'll keep working on it. I don't wanna give out the classic map yet cuz I think it'd be super lame to have two different servers running classic with nearly the same map But if I decide to not launch classic again I'll definitely upload it.

Oh I wasn't planning on actually hosting a server with the maps, I just wanted them for personal use.

Thanks for uploading those, excuse me while I relive the great moments I spent on these.

Alright guys and gals. I'm working on launching both an SMP and Classic server. I expect to be ready by tonight or tomorrow, but if you wanna be able to login as soon as I launch, sign up here!

http://www.canales.me/minecraft/

You will have to register an account (bottom right) in order to register. In order to see the minecraft page, you must enter the super secret password of "minecraft!" without the quotes.

Warning! This form is still in beta and I might completely redesign it, but I probably won't.

Secondly, if you need a block of approved IPs, just fill out the form with the block and a little note about why you need it and I'll get you hooked up.

The IPs are required for classic due to the server not having a whitelist. I'll be using a firewall to implement my own whitelist.

For SMP, no IP is needed, but a username will be.

If you end up launching a TGC Survival server, I'll definitely play on it I've been looking for a server that's on 24/7 with more than a few people. I remember the survival server had a lot of problems with griefing, unfortunately, but hopefully this one will be different. This is all up to you Jericho, but if anyone else is interested with your permission I'd like to help set up some sort of organization within a Survival server. Maybe just a home city for people to start in, or a more complex guild system within vanilla. All ideas though, I might be the only one who enjoys building cities

Going on what thenerd said. Because controlling a server is a massive undertaking. How about event servers, like massive builds or pvp carnage. For instance, I've always wanted to be a part of say one of these:

Well what I'll do is provide a map and a vanilla server with a whitelist. (Whitelists weren't available last time). What you guys do on it is all you, and of course I'll play when I can

Events should totally be on the table, there's plenty of space in smp to do events on different parts of the map.

@ Jericho

Would it be too much to ask to add factions to the server? It basically gives the users the responsibility of looking after their own stuff rather than a moderator having to do so.

What does everyone else think? I'm fine with a vanilla server too.

I'll be just running vanilla SMP. With a whitelist I think we'll all be fine.

As for progress, I apologize to everyone who already filled out the form, but I did have to change it! Don't worry, I copied the entries over. However, I added some features to the IP whitelist, so please review it and modify as needed. You can now enter a domain (like from no-ip) or a (smallish) range if you're behind a proxy. Thanks! Last time, I promise! As for an ETA, still working on the backend of the form that manages the firewall. It'll take some time but I'm working as fast as I can!

Oh, and if any of the instructions are confusing or otherwise don't make sense, let me know!

Hmm, yes it is very easy to miss the appropriate links. I'll fix it. But for now, make sure you register on my blog, login, then visit: http://www.canales.me/minecraft/?a=edit to see the form.

Progress report:

The appropriate whitelist software has been written, tested and working. I just need to find time to finish up installing minecraft and testing it. As for SMP, that's been pushed back for the foreseeable future as my home server's (which has the horsepower to run SMP) hard drive died. I don't have the money to replace it, so there's no SMP for now. Classic will run on my internet webserver just fine though so it's still comin!

Alright guys, here's the latest news. Unfortunately minecraft vanilla classic is broken due to the new minecraft username system. Classic cannot verify names any longer and it takes a major hack just to generate a valid URL to join the server. Because classic cannot verify names, anyone can login as a mod at any time. Further, the custom servers are far too finicky for my liking and many of them suffer the same problem as vanilla classic. Therefore, I will not be launching classic. I'll be releasing all my map files once I can get at em again which might be within a week or two.

As for SMP, TheComet has graciously provided some server space. I've offered him the use of my whitelist so as of right now that's coming once we can work out the details.

Can't wait to dive into nostalgia with the old server. I doubt my old base is where I remember it, though.

Wouldn't it be possible to import the old classic map into a new world, and then build a wall around it so people stay in and give everybody creative???

That defies the use of the wall.

Working out a few things with the server. I haven't had any time at all to really sit down and get it running yet. Maybe I'll have some time on Wednesday, that's usually always a boring day.

Here are the classic map files. The backup files are the map over the last 24 hours it was run. The maps folder contains images of the map over time.
