Welcome! Everyone on these forums loves everyone, so automatically you've been overwhelmed with forum love.

On a more serious note, ya, feel free to ask questions about anything computer related and somebody here shall be bound to know an answer!

Welcome to the forums.

I am sure there is much you can learn from folks here. We generally are a friendly bunch and there's plenty of folks who can answer questions or offer advice.

I assume you joined these forums you're interested in game creation, you've said programming too. What kind of thing are you looking into?

In regards to not having to go to school, the internet taught me how to program. The resources are out there and if you're doing it for fun, I don't think you need to take any courses. For me, this is all a hobby. Even if you're looking to take it beyond a hobby, it makes a great head-start.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay, if you have any questions, please, do not be afraid to ask.

Hi smc, welcome, make yourself at home

Be sure to check the Acceptable Usage Policy for the forum too

Yeah, everything you are keen to learn is available by most of the users already present, including me

So ask away!

A few tips, On the left side of your own posts you will find a piece of text stating Edit Post, if you are the last user to post in a thread and you have something not so important to mention as an addition to your last posting, you should edit it and then submit the edit, it will then edit your last posting, unless you have something like an announcement to make on said thread, you simply post again at the bottom of the thread[page], this will save you from getting put on moderation or worse, a ban...

there are some blocks above the edit boxes, namely:

B _ U _ I _ CENTER _ QUOTE _ EMAIL _ IMAGE _ LINK _ CODE

B _ U _ I = are easy to use simple highlight the text you wish to alter and then click the button you wish to add the effect of...

CENTER _ QUOTE _ CODE _ EMAIL = have two methods... if not three... Method one, you click them once and a CODE block QUOTE block or CENTER block is placed at the end of the text in your edit box... start typing after this BLOCK or paste text and then click the corresponding button again, viola you closed the BLOCK... The other method is to highlight the text as before with B U I and then click the effect you wish to apply again... The third which mostly I use with QUOTE is to copy a piece of text from the same page, and click the QUOTE button which sometimes pastes the copied text along with being surrounded by the QUOTE BLOCKS, and you just continue typing [You do need to click after the closing block first though]

IMAGE _ LINK = Have similar methods but usually you can just click them and a popup box appears whereby you can paste the URL LINK to the image or page... alternatively highlight a URL already in your comment box and it turns it into a link address... but makes a copy of it so do not worry this is normal behaviour, The IMAGE button will always open a popup box...

Emoticons, just click them, but they are inserted at the end of your comment box at all times as far as I have had experience with them...

You can also embed YouTube and SoundCloud content... these are a tiny bit complicated so just ask if you wish to add them...

There are a few more hidden functions and such, maybe someone can point them out

Hope this helps answer many common questions

See you around

I would say it depends on how you feel comfortable starting. The way I started was to start with tools that require no programming knowledge, namely The Games Factory and RPG Maker. But they just let me get out my creativity and gave me a feel for making games. After that, I went straight into Dark Basic.

FPS Creator (sold on this website) offers a similar click and drag game creation approach, but FPSC also has the option for you to script parts of your game, which may be a good way of starting to get a feel for programming and build from there.

Some may prefer throwing themselves straight in and learn programming first. Dark Basic and App Game Kit are both very good entry level products for programming, because they're simple enough to comprehend. They're also very powerful.

For Dark Basic tutorials, I would recommend any tutorials by Daniel Foreman.
The good thing with Dark Basic Professional is there's a free version you can try out.

If you're looking for something more complicated or more industry standard, there's a lot of C++ tutorials out there. TGC also has a C++ compatible version of the Dark Basic Pro framework called Dark GDK. If you're looking for something in between, there's C# and for that I recommend this tutorial for getting started. TGC also do a version of Dark GDK for C# (and Visual Basic) called Dark GDK.NET.

But for most newbies who want to program, I think Dark Basic Pro is a great place to start and the bonus of having Dark GDK and Dark GDK.NET is that by knowing everything you've learned in Dark Basic Pro, suddenly you're able to apply that knowledge with a different programming language, which should make learning the language easier.
