I took an online Java class at school. Turns out they mainly focus on gaming and basics of Java. I was so happy. Was told that the final project is a game. The book seems to cover lots of topics about Java. I'm so excited about it.

What book did they give ya? I have a shelf full of java books, none of mine ever mentioned games but then again online web-games were still new when I started java.

Glad to see you're excited about learning Java

Java is a good language to learn. In fact, it's probably my favorite programming language. And it's even better that you get to learn about game programming in your class too! My current game project is being made in Java and things are going great.

Seeing as you are enjoying it, that price tag must be worth it

I have no quarrels buying pricey books, you should see my current collection

lol, one of the reviews on that book:

Quote: "This book cost me over $750. I will be burning the book as opposed to selling so that other may not suffer the same fate."

Anyone who claims to have paid that much for any textbook is an idiot. And he said he dropped the class to avoid bad grades. Sounds like the problem was with the student more than the book.

Here's the Java book I had the unfortunate pleasure of using at a community college (my review is ranked more helpful )
http://www.amazon.com/Java-Programming-Comprehensive-Concepts-Techniques/dp/1418859850/ref=cm_cr-mr-title

Fortunately, I knew java before taking this class and was able to point out many, many mistakes. By both the book and the instructor. I can not recommend this book to anyone who is studying alone. The frustration of not knowing why your program doesn't compile despite having written exactly what was in the book would drive a person mad. I ended up teaching several of the students myself after telling them their book was wrong.

I hope that someday I pick up Java... perhaps after C#.NET

Looks like somewhere in March-April on the class syllabus we have to pick a topic for the game project. Looks like it's around a month to a month and a half deadline. I guess they'll tell us more when the date comes by.
