Hello,

I'm using 3dws for the first time, and I'm doing some tests before making the real scenario (I'm learning!).

Now I made some basic shapes in 3dws and exported to dbo.
Finally I imported them in dbpro using this code:

The problem is I see the "scenario" (dbo file) as black (and a blue backdrop).
I also added ambient and directional light but no change.
Please can you give me a startup point (clear point!) to go on?

Thank you for your help!

UPDATE:

I imported the map using ".x" file, then added point light. Now I see some effects, but...

1) ambient light seems to get no effect.
2) point lights don't work using DBO file (same mesh as before).

This is my "new" code:

Please help!!

Avoid using .X files; the only reason to use 3DWS .X files are to extract details of the scene using some external or alternative map parser.

DBO files will load much more quickly and accurately.

I am taking a wild guess that the reason you cannot see all of your nice textures in your scene is because you didn't lightmap it. All 3DWS .dbo exports are lightmap dependant. By minimum, add a sun light to your scene and lightmap the scene by pressing CTRL+L.

There is a light-mapping video tutorial here.

If that does not work, then let us know.

@Chris Tate I already added lightmap, but nothing changed.
It seems that neither ambient light nor directional light have effect.

How did you export the DBO file? Did you export it directly into the folder or did you manually copy the DBO file from one place to another?

3DWS exports the file with its textures in a single folder. Make sure the textures are in the same folder as the .DBO file.

Post the project and media files if you want me to take a closer look.

The directional light and ambient light are unlikely to be the issue since the map for the most part is self lit by its own lightmap. But I'd need to take a closer look to be sure; I am having to guess from here.

Update: I tried to make 3 simple models using AC3D, then export them as ".x". THey work perfectly, included textures.
If I do the same using 3DGS I get no textures and "black" models.

What I did: I tried to load you .dbo and it loads but as you comented, just black shape...then I comverted to mesh and applied a texture to it, and I realised that your object has not texture map coordinates. Perhaps you have to assign it texture correctly but I don't know how 3D World Studio works. In your .x file, it has map coords, but looks like you scale your object texture 4x12

In your object I just can see a cylinder made with 12 sides.

Cheers.

Reading 3dgs manual I found this note:

Quote: "

Loading Maps
3D World Studio can export maps to the .map, .x, .b3d, .dbo, and .wmp formats. However, all of these formats lose information in the export (lighting, entities, etc.). To get the most out of 3D World Studio, it is recommended that you load the .3dw (3D World) file format directly.
"

OMG! And I bought this program only to export full maps in dbo!! Damn!

You can still use MapScape or Deled that are free and both export to .Dbo with lightmapping.

Now now let's not get too excited; there is an explanation; it really does get easy. Although MapScape is quite cool.

Firstly... Before loading your .DBO File I can already see why it is going to display black. There are no textures. Where are they? There should be at least two; one is the texture, the other is the lightmap.

In 3DWS, everything must have a texture. Texturing the object in DBP the common way would NOT work; because texture stage zero is a lightmap texture. You'd have to texture stage 1; this is why it is black; since there is no light

Here is your program running on my system.

And here is what your map file with one of my textures in the same folder. Must be in the same folder of the model; unless you wanted to override it.

Map files

Notice that there is also a light map texture which is extremely important!

And about what 3DWS says about loading 3DW files; it is a general recommendation because they did not want to create a 3DW parser for you; so instead they recommend that you do the work...

You do not need to load 3DW files into DBPRO; doing so is just one of many ways of loading grouping and naming information.

Actually, also make sure you delete all the material files and objects that are in your model folders and the default textures as you cannot use these, nor are they exported... you must use/create your own textures...

I would have thought you would have copied the textures lol... but then I recall that the default textures do not export with the model... if you use your own textures, they are copied into the same directory/folder as the model file, I will make a video soon showing exactly how to get the most out of 3XWS... let me know if you want to make me push it out this weekend...

@Chris Tate I tried what you suggested about 3dgs, and it works well even with dbo files

Thank you!
